Title: Let's Build a Film Library
Post by perpetualstudent on Jul 24th, 2015 at 10:34am
Simple idea-

Each post adds a series or a movie that we think should go in the library. Only one movie or series per post.

The Shawshank Redemption.

The first real date I had with my wife was watching it in my dorm back in undergrad. I won't spoil the ending but I will say it was a very very good ending.

2001- A Space Odyssey

My all-time favorite movie. Masterwork of science-fiction. Way ahead of it's time. Superb visual effects. Just watch it if you haven't already. :)

Hudson Hawk - again and awesome fun movie that critics didn't like :noidea:
It's got everything - again one I always watch when it's on.

Whoops apocalypse.

Obscure british comedy, always has me laughing so hard I can't breath.
The sas versus the waxworks dummies at madam tussauds, is just  classic - oy yeah, there's a teensy weensy ittle bitty bit of swearing. make sure kids are out of earshot ;-).

star wars - all three original films, uncut, un-digitised, un-messed with.

the scene from raiders of the lost ark where he shoots the big guy with the dword and the scene from the second film where he tries to do the same thing and hasn't got a gun.
Might as well throw in the rest of the films as well.

wim wenders 'wings of desire'
Quite possibly peter falk's finest film.

It's about angels in berlin, great film.

Brotherhood of the wolf - subtitled version in original french.

Probably marc dacascos's best film.
And has naked monica belucci in her prime. Well she's not exactly gone downhill, but back then she'd make a corpse sit up and drool :-)
There's fit naked men for the women as well :-)

Shrek - not shrek 2 or 3 or 4. But the original film.

Brilliant.

jean de florette and Manon des Sources

I caught jean de florette purely by accident one evening while trolling for something to watch.
Not my usual cup of coffee (don't drink tea) but just totally compelling performances by all concerned - particularly gerard depardieu.

There are no happy endings, but damn such good films.

Life of brian

Best observational and satirical film on religion EVER made.
And one if the funniest films ever made as well.

Title: Re: Let's Build a Film Library

Monty python and the holy grail - not as good as Brian. But still has some of the best comedy ever committed to celluloid.

Is there anyone here who hasn't acted out the black knight sketch, at least once ?

And while we're with Arnold. Conan the Barbarian.
Not the remake with some skinny underwear model. But the original dino de laurentis epic.
It's as true to Robert Ervin Howards original character as could be.

Conan wasn't some hairdoed model, he was a big muscled monster of a man.

Highly agree with Life Of Brian. And that it's superior to the holy grail. It is a beautiful example of what humans do. And, it should be said, not nearly as blasphemous as you would think. It's much more about what we do as followers than it is about a specific religion.

I'd add Shrek 2 though. Not as brilliant as the first- but solid. As far as I'm concerned they never went any further. Sort of like how they've never done a Fantastic 4 film. Because NO-ONE gets to ruin the origin story of Victor Von Doom like that. It never happened.

Title: Re: Let's Build a Film Library
Post by curious_aardvark on Jul 24th, 2015 at 3:20pm
shrek 2 was rubbish. No ogrey stuff, no caterpillar toothpaste.

And what's wrong with the f4 films ? I rather like them

I'll add the first ironman film and the avengers film. And the other two iron man films.
I'll throw OUT the second captain america film - what was the point ?
And the second thor film was also somewhat pointless.

Guardians of the galaxy

Great film for all the family.
Damn right we are Groot.

Also for the fact that they signed up Vin diesel to play the voice of groot. Man bet that ws one short recording session :-)

Pitch Black

One of the finest sf films made in the last 20 years and easily vin diesel's finest hour and a bit.

Aliens who aren't humans wearing masks - finally someone gets the idea of ALIEN

Title: Re: Let's Build a Film Library

Alien and Aliens, skip the third film and go straight to alien resurrection - excellent film.
And speaking of ron perlman...

And not just for sygourney weaver in her undies

Great aliens - although a tad too human shaped for my liking, but still very good.

The Thing - best non-digital effects ever committed to film !
Vampires - the definitive vampire film
Escape From New York -'call me snake'.

Big trouble In Little China.

It's in my top ten if not the top five of best films ever made. Kurt Russel at his prime was unbeatable.
'It's all in the reflexes'.

Animal house
The late great John Belushi at his mental finest.
Not that great a film as it kind of grinds to a halt in places - but a classic of it's genre and some truly memorable scenes.

Not because it was an original film - it was a western in space.

But the 3d effects were mind blowing.
The screen and tablets were full 3d within the 3d of the room. One of the few films I'd urge you to see 3d in a cinema.

F4 ruined the origin of Dr Doom.

No longer is Doom disfigured by trying to rescue his mother from an infernal dimension after steeping himself in study- his iron suit placed on him white hot as his only hope of survival. Doom just got hit with the same cosmic rays as everybody else and had a psychotic break.

Hypothetically that's what would have happened if they had made the film in 2005. Wonderful thing that they didn't.

Agree 100%. If you're going to monkey around with characters, at least make them better. Like original, cerebral Nick Fury to badass Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. Obviously my first suggestion is...

Rocky Horror Picture Show.

You can't go through life without watching Rocky Horror Picture Show at least once.

Sad Movie. (새드무비 or Saedeu Mubi)

Nobody does a tear jerker like the Korean studios can. You'll have to endure subtitles, but it's oh-so worth it. This is a film that you walk away from and think, "damn, I must be doing something right. My life doesn't suck nearly as bad as [insert just about any given character]." It hits like a punch to the gut.

Ink.

It's an Indie film, so low budget and little FX. But it has one trippy SciFi story and great costuming and make up.

Pandorum.

It sucks. I know it, you know it, everyone knows it. There's practically no storyline and what story there is just sucks. The explanations, the rationale don't make sense. But I still find myself watching it whenever it's playing. Some things are so bad that they're good.

And while I'm thinking about Jennifer Anniston in Leprechaun...

We're the Millers.

It's really dirty and really profane. If you're of age and still find those things funny, watch this film.

It makes no sense, but it makes no sense with cool graphics.

Should also include some G and PG good Movies I think:

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West

Animated mouse heads west. Dom Delouise, John Cleese, and even Jimmy Stuart voice characters. Hilarious as a kid- still good as an adult. Very much looking forward to sharing that with my daughter.

How to Train Your Dragon

Shockingly the best "dragon being trained to take a rider" montage I've seen. Funny movie, only saw as an adult but really enjoyed it. Don't bother about the sequel though. The best thing you can say about it is that it's not painful to watch.

The Incredibles

Watch. This. Movie. Seriously. If you haven't go watch it now. The best pixar film imho. What happens when superheroes are no longer welcome in society so they settle down to raise a family incognito? Good story, humor on multiple levels, hard to oversell this one. If you don't enjoy it- I think something may well be wrong with you.

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto.  Mel might be nuttier than a fruit cake but he put together a suberb action movie.  Through the entire movie there is edge of your seat action... in fact this may be one of the best action movies ever.  Also, many primitive weapons are used.

The Haunting;
An old black and white 1963 horror movie.  The special effects are light in this one.  Instead they use suspense, excellent acting and directing, and a great story to scare your pants off in what is the best  haunted house movie ever.
Don't watch the 1999 remake.  It is very sorry, sad, and that's being kind.

Title: Re: Let's Build a Film Library

Starship Troopers;

Motel Hell;
This is a very clever parody of all B horror movies.  Many people who watch it don't realize that it's a parody.. they think it's real and that I'm sick for laughing through it.  "Meat's meat and man's gotta eat!" Guess what's in Farmer Vincent's sausage?

Flight of the Phoenix

Any description makes it seem lame. But I remember watching it when I was a kid and enjoying it- instead of it being another boring adult film I watched entranced. I watched it again a couple years ago and it was excellent. That speaks well of it.

Ghostown with Ricky Gervais

Surprisingly good film. A misanthropic dentist wakes up and he can see all the ghosts in NYC. And they can communicate with him mishaps ensue. One of the few comedies of the last several years that I really enjoyed. I've watched it multiple times. Funny- especially if you enjoy your humor with a slight misanthropic bite you'll enjoy it. Low budget but very good.

Brit comedy, same team as Shaun of the Dead but better movie. Funny. Good cop humor.  Good rural-urban humor. A bit more niche but I loved it.

You want timeless classic and brilliant effects?

Chronicles of Narnia series. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was spectacular. Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader don't quite make "timeless classic" status, but they're good films that can stand on their own.

hmmm, the supehero genre needs beefing up:

Megamind

I know what you're thinking. Will Ferrell, and superman spoofing, why on earth would I subject myself to that? Well because it's actually got some good thoughts on the philosophy that always undergirds superheros. And if philosophy is not your thing, it's got some great humor. Highly underrated movie.

Watchmen.

I actually prefer the movie to the graphic novel. It earns its R rating. But. Well worth the watch if you're of age. I can't think of much to say about it that won't damage parts of the movie. But Rorschach and Dr Manhattan are fascinating characters, and with a little more life behind me than the first time round- The Comedian is also compelling. It's dark and unflinching though not without humor.
