Title: What have you killed with a sling?
Post by hassan on Jun 3rd, 2013 at 7:17pm
As the title says, what animal's last sight was a rock flying towards their head?

As for me, I took out a lizard at thirty paces. Probably a lucky shot.

a very expensive picture window...and the fish tank on the opposite end of the living room :-X . That's about it...no formal intentions to destroy life, however.

Don't aim at animals unless you are hunting and will use what you hit. That goes for all weapons. And don't tell us if you do so out of season.

Plywood, milk jugs, beer bottles, soda cans, plastic bottles, some concrete, the occasional tree, a mouse, my target, a piece of carpet...

Rabbits, grouse and couple squirrels.
I've thrown at coyotes, dogs, cats some livestock but only to chase them out of or into places.
Slings are not reliable enough for consistent hunting success. I've missed a ton more then I've hit.
Scared the crap out of a bunch of animals, injured or killed very few.

There are a lot of rabbits around which means that right now there are fewer coyotes and foxes and birds of prey. Thinking it's time to take in some live animal practice.

Have wanted to throw into a flock of ducks or geese but havent' yet. It's one of the few ways a sling can be used to take game with a better chance of success.

I cannot say how much self control it took to not take sling a stone at a humongous goose twenty feet away at a subdivision lake this morning.

I slung a live frog once cause a little girl asked me to. She wanted to see him fly! Lol I fouled the shot and and he nosed dived into the water like a rocket. Never have I or hopefully ever Have to kill an animal.

My shoulder and my elbow...

... I also almost hit a bird mid-flight the other day, unintentionally of course.

A bee. I used the leather pouch and crushed it with my hand    ;)

Lots of time. Also, occasionally a conversation*.  :P

The concept of hunting with a sling is absolutely fascinating to me, but the reality is not nearly as exciting.

*which I was later able to revive, it just changed to be about slinging.  8-)

My dog likes lizards.

Rocks if you can believe it.

With practice I've found that I can cause rocks to explode on the surface of a lake near my home. The right kind of rock, thrown just right at the surface of the water, will shatter like glass.

Also, I'm very sure your dog would have more fun hunting lizards than you would.

I buy landscaping rocks from Lowe's or Home Depot at about $3.00 a bag (I don't know what prices are elsewhere). Occasionally you get a few rocks in a bag that have weird angles or are cracked off in places due to shipping and handling.

If you can get that rock to hit the water (or ground, for that matter) on or near that angle or crack, BOOM. Very satisfying. Similar to the shotgun effect a few other people have posted about in another forum. I don't claim to be able to control the flight to that degree, obviously, but it's happened enough times that I've come to expect four or five such events per bag.

I was SIX INCHES away from killing a squirrel this morning. Sadly my accuracy was diminished as I had to be very careful, what with being in an urban environment with houses all around me slinging stones.

Seriously kid, don't post about aiming at animals. You're too young to legally hunt by yourself, I know you weren't given permission to sling at animals by your parents, you've admitted to having no use for the lizard you aimed at before, and it's definitely not small game season anywhere with a squirrel population (I checked). That's poaching. Don't do that, don't drag slinging.org into your illegal activities, and especially don't poach. You're asking to get in trouble on here. And slinging deadly ammo with deadly force in a neighborhood? That's asking to get in trouble in real life.

There must be some sort of karmic wheel circle of life thing going on here because we just nursed a lizard back to health that the friggin cats mauled on.  Kind of a cool experience actually.  Really made me appreciate the little guys more.

To add one more reason to Masi's list (not that it's needed), but,  you will probably feel bad about it later on in life.  I regret every animal I killed as a kid without purpose.  It sounds kind of quaint I guess, but really, it's just not cool.

That kind of thing happens. I see a rabbit and have 3 things going through my head-
Cute rabbit!
I wonder how it would taste?
What uses do I have for it? (none)
Think of it this way-
You are that squirrel. A human is chucking stones at you for fun. You died because some kid wanted to have some fun. ( I know you didn't hit it but still).

I tried to slaughter a herd of wild balloons that were gently wafting on the seashore in Norfolk last week but my slinging ineptitude ensured their continued survival. I came very close but my girlfriend and dog were tiring of watching failure so I gave up.
I think the 'pop' would have been very satisfying.

You should have used small round pebbles, shot from a long powerful sling. They go very, very, very fast.

Uuuuhhhh... I think you need to remember to inflate them with AIR, not HELIUM or HYDROGEN.

Acetylene.  Throw those visco rocks at them!  We used to light acetylene balloons in a weld shop I worked in.  If you lit it on the shop floor it would leave these cool carbon black sunbursts around where they used to be.  Nice thing was they were easy to clean just by sweeping them

That is insanely cool. Hydrogen ballons?

Hydrogen wont keep them inflated well and would seep out quickly.

Same goes for helium. Both atoms are very small and light.

Title: Re: What have you killed with a sling?
Post by CodeMaker on Jun 7th, 2013 at 7:09pm
i believe helium is smaller than hydrogen. it's just that hydrogen weighs less. so if you use helium quality balloons and weight them down so as not to blow away, you shouldn't have problems.

I will no longer refer to hunting out of season, after this post, which I will use for my defense.

The lizard really was to feed my dog. He doesnt get much food. As I lived in Africa at the time where there are no seasons, I was not doing that illegaly.

I was attempting to kill the squirrel for three reasons:
The bragging rights of doing so with a weapon predating the bow.
The awesomeness of using the leather of an animal I slew for a sling.
And finally, for eating the meat of an animal I slew with my dog.

I was also unaware that squirrel hunting had a season, and that hunting them outside of that season would be considered poaching.

Also, my parents in fact DID give me permission to hunt that squirrel, gave me tips on how to do it better, and even were out there while it happened.

That is me explaining myself.

Bion of Borysthenes (c. 325 – c. 250 BC) was a Greek philosopher closely allied to the Cynic school, who was famous in the ancient world for his witty remarks.

Boys throw stones at frogs in fun, but the frogs do not die in fun, but in earnest.
Variant translation: Boys throw stones at frogs for fun, but the frogs don't die for "fun", but in sober earnest.
As quoted by Plutarch, Moralia, xii. 66

I read a variety of this on a plaque in my grandmothers kitchen ,   from the time I learned to read ,  until she passed away.
Boys throw stones at frogs in jest, but the frogs die in earnest.
