I think Scratch wood is a tree, what you have there is Scrap wood.

Kind of an urban bundle bow, I like it.

You'd pick up a few fps if you narrowed the tips and it'd be much more comfortable if you narrowed the handle some too.

If you ever want to build a simple self bow, myself and they guys on here would be more than willing to giver you some pointers ans help you out.

I built some bundle bows when I first started out, now that I've made some serious self bows, I'd never go back.

Its tough and takes a good bit of patience, but its definitly worth it.

If you want to make the bow less likely to break and possibly add a few pounds, glue a strip of cloth on the back.  That's called backing the bow and it helps keep the bow from breaking by preventing splinters from lifting on the back as you draw.  And, as the cloth has to stretch, it adds a few pounds to the bow.  It does not prevent the belly of the bow chryselling or collasping, (the wood cells collaspe under the pressure of the draw) but it usually adds to the life of the bow.  If all you have is cloth tape, a strip of it down the back before you put the bow together will help.

I think that is some excellant engineering, it really shows that you are using your brains to acomplish some problem solving.

I use bamboo a lot for these things. I just use electrical tape!
narrow your tips, it will really help. whats the poundage on that thing?

I do have some strong glue but not clamps strong enough so I had to wrap some fabric around the handle :)

Those are bed slate and I can draw it to full... well, draw ^^

I didn't weight it yet, I still have tofind  way to do it with what I have at home...

Ok, just weighted it...

It should be around 6kg for a full draw at 73cm. So around 13.23 pounds at 28.7 inches.
Note that : I weighted it with a bucket filled bit by bit with water, so it's not rocket accurate and that I used only 2 slates, so Jauke's should be heavier :)

And since it's for my girlfriend and she don't know how to shot... it's best if not too heavy ^^

Light bows are fun, too.  And believe it or not, they are actually harder to shoot than a heavier bow.  A light bow will show you everything you are doing wrong.  A poor release on a heavy bow, the string rips from your fingers so you don't miss by much, no follow through, the arrow is moving fast enough that again, you just miss.  Dropping your bow arm, same.  Now, try that with a very light bow, poor release, you watch the arrow wobble down range and thump into the target way off to the side of the bullseye.  No follow through, you end up with your hand in front of your face.  Drop the bow arm, the arrow hits the ground in front of the target.

Since the big one is still working and the base material quite cheap, I decided to experiment.

This one is made with one bed slate, from ash wood, I simply filed 2 nocks at each end (and sandpapered the sides) :

There is still work to do to bring it up a decent band (I don't even know if it will be possible... ) ^^
I think I will need to make it almost "center shot".
For now, it's a really heavy bow, I think it will stay so if I don't have to butcher it too much

I used Asemery's 3-plies cords tutorial to make the cord. To "dress" the loop, I undid the knot, enlarge the loop and wound the free end around the loop (adding more string after a few turns)

For this first loop, I didn't take care and wrapped it in the wame direction the cord was twisted, so the loop want to continue twisting. For the other, I wrapped "counterdirection" and the loop stayed straighter :)

The other one is from white poplar.
The slate was shorter but wider, so I decided to cut it to form.

Then I took my rasp and tried to reduce the branch thickness.

Next project, make a reflex bow out of 2 slates...

Nice work, jauke.  I'm sure in an emergency situation your bow would be powerful enough to bring down birds, squirrels, rabbits, etc..
