further to discussion on the hillfort thread.

we're looking for slingers to take part in an experiemnt at hod hill hillfort way down in dorset.

Basically it's about as far away from civilisation as you can get :whistle:

But it's where we've got official permission to play.
Plus it's a newer style double ditched fort.

So we're looking at either the second 9th - 10th, or fourth - 23rd-24th  weekends in march. A month with 5 weekends in it :-)  

I can't do the first weekend and pete can't do the 3rd and david can't do the last.
As I know we're all reliable and will turn up if we say we will - that gets preference :-)

As far as transport goes I'll be driving down from the midlands and staying overnight somewhere in the vicinity. So can do brief detours from the route to pick people up. As a rough guide pic below shows my probable route.
At a push I can take 4 people with reasonable luggage. just bear in mind it's a two day trip. Too far to do twice in one day.
And I'm not prepared to detour more than about 10-15 miles from the route or it'll take all bloody day :-)

I know nothing about public transport but assuming there's a train station in the vicinity then pete and I will offer taxi service to and from.
I'll probably do food as well. Definitely taking my new little portable bbq.

Oh yeah and bring full wet weather gear - this is england in march it will probably rain the entire weekend :-)

I am good for 9/10 or 23/24. I can get to Burton on Trent and head down with you.

Unfortunately I wont be able to make any weekend in March, but I was wondering, based on the interest for this event, would we be able to organise a slingfest during the summer?

There is a Balearic slinging competition on the weekend 25/26 May at the Primitive Gathering in Holmbush, nr Henfield, North of Brighton.

yep I'll be down south for that as well :-)
But unfortunately pete can't get permission for hod hill that deep into the tourist season.

hm....
I would LOVE to go...
But being 13 i cannot drive.
And my family would not enjoy a 1000+ mile road trip.
Most of them consider slinging just another wierdo thing I do that has become normal for me.
Now if it was held within about 100 mi of my house.....
Cincinati, Ohio, and/or Florence, KY would work.. or somewhere close to that area.
Like under 30 min drive from florence.
I do not live there, but close enough!
EDIT- Actually, there is a park nearby that has (somewhat hilly) a nice area for slinging.
At least with tennis balls.
There is a large field, close to i guess 100 meters long......
If we used tennis balls, it would be safe.
However, My parents would not be the happiest people on earth if i had to host a slinging gahtering...

C_A, thanks for stirring up the interest!

But, before I lose control, let me be clear: this is a carefully controlled experiment, NOT a general-purpose slingfest.

I am very happy to have two slingers at once in the experiment, but it will be difficult to take more than two at a time. I really prefer not to have everyone at once.

I can cope with two on the Saturday and a different two on the Sunday, however, and having a couple of extra people around to watch out for and chat to the general public would be handy, so don't let me put anyone off: I just want to make sure it's clear.

I'm not just being difficult: I've been in discussion with the National Trust, on and off, for about eight months, and I'm about to sign a formal agreement with them to allow the use of the site under a very specific set of conditions. I really don't want to put all that effort at risk.

In terms of dates, it seems likely that C_A and David would come for the 9th and 10th. I have another, solo, slinger lined up for the 23-24th, so could take another that weekend, I can do Sunday 17th (but not Saturday 16th), I could do the 2nd/3rd and I can do just about any mid-week day in March or first week of April.

It will take a few hours to run the trials, so for anyone reasonably close, only one day is needed. From further away, a weekend makes sense both for travel and so there's a back-up day in case of bad weather.

And, by the way, I don't care whether the slingers are English or not! The hill's in England is all. I don't require them to be Durotriges either! Pete.
