Title: Is chat ever active?
Post by GIMike on Oct 16th, 2012 at 12:13pm
I was just curious if there was any particular time when chat was active.  I've tried it a few times when I'm here at work.  Being web based, it's one of the few I can get to behind our firewall :)

Not much. When I had a computer I would pull it up in another window when I got in the forum, but unless there's an organized event the chat is usually dead.

I go to the General link then count the bodies at the bottom. if there are 6 or more.
I'll some times open a chat window in a different tab then start an I'm in chat topic.

I'll usually pick up 3 or 4 willing to chat.. generally takes 10-15 min for everyone to assemble in the chat room. We have tried scheduling but that has not worked out well. I tried for a while to promote check the chat room on the 20s ie on the hour, 20 past the hour and 40 past the hour...that also didn't work out ...

for a while in a land far far away and once upon a time there was a moderator who hosted a weekly chat and kind of moderated the chat ... which worked after a fashion ... hard to schedule a good world wide chat window.

I think posting an "I'm in chat" topic works as well as anything I've seen on the forum.

5 members in the chat now and somehow I can't login  :P when I click on the log in button the screen opens but then rapidly closes again

Had same problem with fire fox and ie ... went and acquired an old version of avant ... I logged in with that .... still had to mash the fool out of the login (a lot of rapid presses) before a login window would stay in place.

We had it active for a little while anyway :)  Got a few of us in there.  Thanks for joining those of you who did!

we had a system going where if we were on the forum, we would all agree to pull up the chat. We'd also post in a thread stating we were on, and what time it was (including time zone). This let others know. If the post was over an hour ago, chances are that user already left, so we could save some time.

Nothing against doing the same with this thread, seeing that's it's already here

All of you who weren't there 11 hours ago, you have missed a nice talk on duck cooking and the use of duck grease.

Teg, if yo have too much duck on sunday, you can try a second serving with apple slices instead of potatoes and mushroom.

Mhh... Slightly cooked apple slices with duck on honey sauce... A poem in the pan...

For the duck on honey with potatoes, mushrooms and persil (with or without crème fraîche): I thought a little drip of high quality balsamico over it before serving could match perfectly.

When we had an "Are you on chat" thread it was a good bit more active. I had at least 2 chats thus far but I would really like to have more regarding The Slinger's Guide.

Since I usually have about 50 open IE windows anyway, I'll open it up every day in case anybody decides they want to come in and say hi

you might need to change your browser setting to allow popups from the forum/chat application.

Mind you whenever I click on it it just says - you don;t have java. I do.

So anyone know a better chat application or site we could use ?
The forum chat url is easily modified.

I'm wide open to suggestions.

@C_A Morevil chat on the forums is 2.4 perhaps an upgrade I've seen 4.24 is out
; perhaps Ajax https://blueimp.net/ajax/  or X7 http://x7chat.com/index.php
Hablator chat http://www.tmdhosting.com/open-source/other-php-scripts/Hablator.htmlhas translation services for international use .. don't know I'm not a heavy chat room user.

all I know is with our current morevil 2.4, Windows 7 and Java I have an extremely hard time getting a stable login window with chat.

cheers - when i get a little time I'll have a good look at those :thumb:

the last one looks interesting. as you can discuss different topics in the same chatroom. And the translation facility would make for some hilarious comments.

That's exactly the reason why always dict.leo.org is open when I'm online and not google translator ;) I always remember the tale of the german speaking manager, who during an emergency meeting said: "We are hardly working on it!"

By the way: I'm lurking around in the chat.

Why not open the forum chat in a new window or tab each time you plan to spend more than 10 minutes on the website? I'm trying to make a habit out of it recently.

Right now, I'm planning to spend my evening on the chat...

And you know what ? here, it's already the evening, so there is one person one the chat :p

Come when you want ;)

During the last few weeks, there were usually one or two people online and we had some really nice and interesting talks. Thank you all!

Unfortunately I now updated my Java version and now the chat does not work anymore. I experience the same problem as all the other users: unstable login window.

So to all people who are still able to login: Update your Java, you probably have a security hole  ;).

mIRC or teamspeak could work I guess. Only downside would be that you have to download them rather than using a everyone can access really easily.

I've wrote simple anonymous chat (i.e. no registration yet, and you choose nick on each login).
It is now located http://chat.skyandme.com
I started to write it specifically for this forum... :)

Maybe one of the Mods could create the "Hey, I'm in the Chat!" Thread or something and make it sticky.  When ya log in to the site and see that there is a new post in there, just check it.  If someone has said they are in there recently, jump in!

Now that Yabb has been bumped to 2.5.2; will a new chat be forthcoming?
