Title: Homepage Sling.
Post by Sicanian on Jun 27th, 2011 at 11:41pm
Would anyone be able to duplicate the sling on the homepage?
For purchase or trade of an elk talus bone (spindle pivot).

Does it have to be an exact replica or do you just want it to be braided from vegetable fibers?

I like the design, hemp would be ideal.

Hello, I looked carefully at the homepage sling and I can make you a replica and I have some hemp as well. I live overseas though. Send me a message if you´re interested.

What I´m not sure about is if there was a weave of some sort into the braids on the pouch. I think the picture must be from a museum piece with some deterioration.

But I have seen sling models with the braids as a pouch.

I've never really looked at the homepage sling, the close up makes me want to try it, but my braiding skill and logic tell me not to :P.

Who in their right mind would put a museum sling under tension like that?

I'm pretty sure it's a modern sling, either a replica or an original made within the last decade. It's part of a museum display on the culture of Guam.

Just read the trading post rules.
Rockman, thanks for offering to make it however, I imagine someone closer to Yang-Na might be able to brade it.
Will be happy to trade some woods along with that talus bone, i.e. agave, elderberry, mulefat spindles with an aspen drill bow.

it looks to me like an etruscan with some loose material woven into the ends to keep the pouche's shape. i've seen this done on a few other slings before.

here's another one with a similar pouch http://anthro.amnh.org/anthropology/databases/common/image_dup.cfm?catno=80%2E0%2F%202950%20A

Thanks for the pic, I am planning on making this sling myself, I am confident I can make one similar, planning on adding some colour to it though.

If you can read and braid, you can do it.

I am in the process, will probably post pics sometime soon. wound up doing a 24-strand braid. it eats cordage. Question- should I do 4 6-strand pouch pieces or 4 5 strand and 1 4 strand? Or what about 8 3 strand ones??? The thing is half done.
Thanks,

If you followed my tutorial and you're half way through, the pouch should be done by now. As far as the construction, if you don't have five cords for the pouch of five strands each it's not a Chamorro sling, it's something else. Post pictures 'cause I'd like to see it.  :)

Pikaru I really like the sling in your first post to farthest right of the photo, the one with the square braided pouch. Pm me if you know of a tutorial ;)
