I really got a kick out of these videos. These "how to" videos get worse and worse everyday.

Archaeologically, the second video's test has a great value.
How do you think men invented archery? I bet the way showed by that guy is the right one. Thinking as an experimental archaeologist. Thinking as an archer, his bow sucks. Mauro. |

MF we are actually not really sure what older bows looked like we can only guess from cave paintings that they looked someting like this ) :), obviously being made out of wood they would have biodegraded by now (unless they were rapidly buried then petrified which would be really cool) . The reason they guess they were really primitve were because indians had poorer quality bows than the english long bows however I find it more likely that they were pretty much always just a stick that got smaller towards the ends and quality just realized on the bower/craftsmen. If you gave an indian 400years ago metal tools I am sure he would have made a beautiul bow.

That's not altogether true. There is still a culture that use the most primitive form of the bow that we know of, the bushmen of the Kalahari Desert. They select a sapling, strip it of bark, rub it with another sick to burnish it, and end up with a simple ) shaped bow. It's even more primitive than a bundle bow, but it is not like "Robinhood's" bow at all. |

NA made beautiful bows even without metal tools. With metal tools they would have been even more amazing I am sure though.

My tribe of Norwegian Apaches made our bows back in the .70s by cutting an ash/yew/hazel sapling, whittling the thicker half a bit thinner/flatter on the side pointing back toward us, cutting a notch in each end, making a loop in a nylon/poly string, looping it over one notch, bending the bow and tying the other end of the string to the other notch.
They sucked, but was primitive :D Our sapling arrows was worse, we cut them fresh and straight so they could dry into curves by themselves :(. Hitting stuff with this equipment barely ever happened :) timann |

Maki there are probably several cultures that still do it the same way they always did and I agree with you but, this is not what the guy with the box cutters made all he did was strip off the branches. Morphy I had kind of a foot in mouth moment there you are totally right :-[ I was reading over "Hunting with a Bow and Arrow" by Saxton Pope http://canteenshop.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/huntingwithabowandarrow.pdf (great book) and he mentions about how Ishi's bow was the most beautiful he had ever seen, I guess when you are using stone tools it ensure you take your time and be patient, giving you a nice and even bow. |

Even the cavemen making the first bows probably wold have done a better job than that second video. They had been working wood for spears, fish boxes, snares and traps, and baskets for a long time. They were making tools such as the atlatl that had to flex in a consistent manner and not break when being used. Bill

Videos made me LOL ;D. Thanks for posting.
Would be a good project for a 6-10 YO kid on a boring summer day though. Reminds me of my first bamboo bow I made when I was 8, with eraser tipped arrows as not to accidentally kill anything. Ah, bamboo! The perfect material for home made toys .... :D |
