Title: Names for slings worldwide and among tribes?
Post by LukeWebb on May 13th, 2010 at 7:54pm
Hey, I was thinking that we should comprise a list of different names for slings from different languages and peoples around the world.  I only know 2 myself, so I am hoping to get some assistance with this.

 1.  Honda, South American I believe, Peru to be exact.

 2.  Moclar, the Bedouin name for a sling.

I am sure there are many others, and feel free to correct the two I listed.  I am curious about what native americans called this weapon and what other tribes and peoples call it, hope you guys/gals know more than I do, thanks.

In addition to the classical arabic "miclaa" in the wiki is "moclar", the modern name.

Wow, I have never really made use of wiki before, that is an excellent article.
If we don't already, shouldn't there be a list of names for slings in the history of slinging or guides sections?

Honda is Spanish. Most of the sling users are pre-Columbian and call it a Waraq'a, or Huaraca, at least iin Quechua., I don't know about Aymara. Maybe Rockman knows a few more from down there?

The Aymara word for a woven sling, according to this dictionary, seems to be q'urawa. The verb "to sling" is q'urawańa (the ' denotes a glottal stop).

I had contact to a specialist in Andean languages (thanks very much to her!).

She informed me that the Uru (northern part of the Uru-Chipaya people on Lake Titicaca) word for the sling is "kista" or "k'ista".

The inhabitants of the southern villages of the Uru-Chipaya use the Aymara word q'urawa (they have lived in close contact to the Aymara for a long time).

I tried to add this to the "slings in different languages" Wiki section, but it was obviously too difficult for me.  :-[  ::)

Btw, the Portuguese word is not "arremesso de funda", afaik, but just "funda", as in Latin. If somebody feels qualified to change it...

Here is one that´s not in the list; slöngvi (Icelandic), literally means hurler/thrower.

A word for sling in Tibetan:  In the Northern dialect where I live (Amdo Tibetan) it is called ar dja.  Tibetan nomads herding sheep and yak still use the sling everyday, so it is a very common word.  I am not sure how to enter the Tibetan name here in this forum, but I can maybe make a picture of the name ar dja in Tibetan.

We are also using another name for the sling in Chinese, because we have translated this name from Tibetan in Chinese.  We say: 尔恰 (er qia) and/or 抛石鞭 (paoshi bian). 尔恰 being the literal translation from Tibetan and 抛石鞭(= 'rock whip' in ENG) the Chinese name describing the sling.

Resurreting this old thread...

In the American Southwest, the people who call themselves Dine, are known by whites as Navajo.  Their word for sling/slinging is

Béh Díkl'híhįį

I know the Wiki has worked since I've been here.  Not sure when it cut out.  I'll shoot Chris a heads up and see if there's anything we can do.
