Title: Bull Roarers Post by Lycurgus on Mar 1st, 2010 at 2:41pm
I know they are not weapons but....
I made one this weekend and although it works, it is not as loud as I expected. I think I have the shape about right (Elipticalish) so I think it could be the end-on profile whch is wrong. Has anyone ever made one? Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance. |

When I was a kid, I had a book called "Where did you go?...."Out." "What dd you do?" "Nuthin."
It was about all the little self-made toys and games and such that young lads made for themselves back in the 30s and 40s. Things like spool tanks and slingshots and....Bullroarers. I made one, using (as I recall) a piece of wooden Venetian blind slat. It worked quite well... That was almost 50 years ago, so I don't remember much of the details! |

Is this what they are?

As a kid I used to use a metal shoe horn on a piece of string. It worked quite well as I remember (also around 50 years ago).
If you're making one out of wood, make sure the cross section is not symmetrical. It has to be induced to spin on its own axis as it is being spun around. |

I've made ones similar to the one in the tutorial. They are surprisingly loud

Made some a while back, I think itīs important you use pretty dense, heavy wood.

Mine is only half as big as your largest so maybe thats the problem. Everything else seems about right, so longer and thinner is the way forward. :) |

got an australian one round somewhere.
used to have fun with it as a kid. And no they're not a weapon lol. aboriginal communications device. the low frequency sound they produce carries a long way. kinda like the way elephants and crocodiles communicate, but for people :-) |

I tried make one from a piece of cherry flooring sample, but alas, no sound. Might it be too small? I made it about (guessing) 6-7 inches by 2 or so.

Probably, Aztec has his at 13 inches. some thing i'ver heard was that the Aborigines also used it as a means of scaring prey into traps, like the boomerang.
the longer it is the more easier it would vibrate/flex and then that would make it sound more? |

No, they are meant for communication over long distances. Also, they are used in some religious rituals. The roaring helps you go into a trance. The only way they could be a weapon is if you hit yourself with it. |

Hmmm... I'm not very impressed with these. They only make noise after about 20 spins, and in little bursts, not like in the video. Any suggestions?

I made one, but its not very loud. I think it needs to be longer and wider, I might make another one.
