nope nobody else has mentioned it.
might be aftershocks of the domain move.

wouldn't worry about it.

I've actually gotten it a couple times, and once I was sure that it was only on slinging.org and not some message from a virus on my computer I put in my slinging.org login stuff and it went away.

can someone do a printscreen and post the screen you're getting. I've never seen this.

But it would be a really good idea to load and run a malwarebytes scan just to be on the safe side.
www.malwarebytes.com

Also which web browser are you lot using ?
and do you have cookies enabled ?

The forum checks passwords and username every time you change sections. if you're not storing your cookies this might be the cause.

Firefox, cookies enabled, ran malware bytes & Sophos. I haven't gotten it again, and I'm clean as a whistle.

I got it yesterday 3 or 4 times in a row, each time I was refreshing the general discussion page.It has to do with Chris' inhabited web program with the little triangles tracking where every one is.

okay - who has firefox and gets this problem.
In which case which version do you have ?

and same question if you use a different browser.
also what OS (operating system) are you using.

I'm often logged in at different levels and never seen this.
Only use windows xp these days.

But I do find a lot of net related problems with clients using vista.

Vista, Firefox v5.x-v6.0 I recently upgraded to the latest Firefox, but I haven't gotten this in a while. I put the firefox versions I was running when I got the message.

Google Chrome windows xp, no idea what version, but downloaded around Thanksgiving.

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by Et Cetera on Mar 3rd, 2010 at 4:04pm
Vista, Firefox (probably the newest one, as I get a lot of those "you've been upgraded to the latest version of Firefox" things).

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by curious_aardvark on Mar 7th, 2010 at 12:21pm
easy fix - dump vista and google chrome - problem solved :-)

Yeah vista has  alot of unnecessary built in crap.

have you still got the user controls switched on ?

Go to control panel, switch to classic layout (left hand side to switch)
select user control and chage settings to Do Not Use User Access Controls.

Becase that's the thing that asks you dumb 'are you sure' questions each time you try and do anything.

This could well be a uac issue.

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by Masiakasaurus on Mar 7th, 2010 at 5:36pm
First thing I did was turn off UAC. It got horribly annoying after 5 minutes!

Nope, not that. It's still good advice, though; to turn off UAC for those who haven't.

I generally need to log out and back in again to get the admin rights every time.
so that's normal.

it's the weird login popping up in the middle of posting that's weird.

I've gone through ubuntu & windows 7 (eeeyeeuurgghh) this week and still not seen this pop up.

Might try vista (got a little netbook I'm using for this sort of stuff :-) at some point.

Any of you using third party firewalls ?
comodo, mcafee etc

mcafee, yes.

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by curious_aardvark on Apr 7th, 2010 at 7:04am
well after 5 os's and various browsers I still haven't been able to replicate this pop up.

I'm coming to the conclusion that it might by add-on or toolbar related. #

any of you running the google toolbar ?
Or any other toolbars ?

yeah - now I've finally got it popping up on mine.

Immediately after looking at davids videos on youtube.

I don't believe in coincidence.

Make a note if it pops up after viewing youtube and returning to slinging.org

Too much of a coincidence to be dissmissed, fairly sure it's got something to do with youtube.

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by paleoarts on Apr 8th, 2010 at 3:36pm
i logged on this morning and have checked out several post and posted myself, but haven't looked at any youtube videos and i'm getting it, so i don't think that is it.

I like your Steampunk Firefox persona Masiakasaurus.  8-)

I have been getting that annoying pop-up averaging almost once per page. It happened both on Firefox (computer uses Windows Mojave for its OS), and Internet Explorer on the campus computers as well. (Campus uses XP for their OS.)

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by curious_aardvark on Apr 9th, 2010 at 6:36am
definitely youtube or google ad's related.
The only time I've had it was after watching david's youtube videos. never popped up on that computer before - and after restarting firefox - didn't come up after either.

I pretty much blame google ads for any dodgy webpages these days - with some serious justification I might add.
so I reckon it's something google's doing (google owns youtube)

I've tried using the site password - no joy.
So no idea what it's actually asking for.

But I still say it's google ads related :-)

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by Et Cetera on Apr 12th, 2010 at 4:30pm
Why wouldn't it pop up on other sites then? Is there a way to block Google ads?

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by curious_aardvark on Apr 13th, 2010 at 11:06am
it's most likely a combination of things - possibly chris's arrow app is partly responsible.

Has anyone tried clicking on the on/off button at the bottom right of the screen, just above the '?'
Try it and see if it makes any difference.

well for me it's positively linked to youtube.

If I have a youtube page open it comes up. Restart firefox with no youttube - no login box.

Any thoughts on the subject welcome.

From the forum owners homepage
the Graduate projects section:

Inhabited Web
I had this idea about a collaborative web application for many years. In short - the system embeds a small, simple visualization into web pages, next to the browser's scroll bar. Triangles are used to represent single users and their position on the current page (scroll position). Collectively, this allows you to see where people are congregating on a web page - perhaps next to a great deal, interesting news story, or funny video.

I believe this is something Chris runs from time to time to gather data for his studies.
http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1257109223/1#1

I'm guessing some action we perform prompts his application to ask for a login.

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?
Post by curious_aardvark on May 28th, 2010 at 7:02am
yep we'd pretty much come to that conclusion - question what else is it reacting with.
it's the little arrows bobbing up and down on the right side of the page.

If I ever figure out how to remove it I will.

But I think it's embedded at the server level and not as part of the forum controls.
Chris did say he was going to remove it, but so far it's still there.

I think - personally - it's reacting to something google adds does. But I do only ever get it if I have a youtube window open as well as slinging.org - so who knows.

AGH. i just had it so-SHOOT- bad that i had to close and reopen the window. everytime i close it it reopens. it happens maybe once or twice every page usually though. I'm using firefox, which is worse than chrome for this problem, however, chrome is glitching on my computer.

interested to know if it still does it.

it does but only once in a while. maybe it's affected because you log out/into some different account somewhere else, and then this account goes screwy?

It was back for me too  :D a while ago. It came pretty often for a while, then stopped.

Title: Re: error inhabited web needs login?

I've had a good look at the forum controls and unfortunately I can't remove the arrow thingy.

Looks like it's installed on the server directly and only chris has access to that - and it looks like he's either on some project somewhere or on holiday (not sure there's a difference with chris - there's a man who enjoys his work :-)

But it is definitely reacting with software on people's computers.
If I had access to a couple that did it regularly I could track it down, but only one of the 4 computers I use regularly has ever shown it and that is directly linked to having youtube open at the same time.

Sorry guys I am trying.
