In order for the slingers to fire at the most maximum range, how much spacings between persons do they need?
If I remember correctly, Gabriel stated 2 meters. Is this accurate? |

Often wondered that myself in light of the efficacy of slingers v archers debate. Slingers obviously require more room than archers but how much? The reliefs of Assyrian slingers show them virtually shoulder to shoulder but that may be somewhat stylized. Also the distance between would depend a lot on the sling length and style used however with Fig.8 or a similar style where the sling is rotated in a vertical plane I'm sure I could sling safely with 2m clearance, perhaps less.

I dunno-- take a slinger 1.6 m tall, let's say he has a sling 1.55 m long (unfolded, of course)-- at point of release, the length of the sling + his arm (say 60 cm ??) already means the tip of the sling is going to be moving around 2.15 m-- not counting steps, twisting of this body, etc, which may add to the distance-- assuming he's slinging sidearm or helicopter, widespread styles in the ancient world.
I'd say a lot more, say 4m btw slingers ? |
Title: Re: Spacing Between Slingers Post by David Morningstar on Dec 20th, 2009 at 7:22am Have a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kikC0Q9m8O8 What is surprising to me is that the release cord doesnt go much wider on the right than the pouch does, it mostly whips out forwards. It is on the left hand side that I need the most room as the sling is fully extended after release. This needs hardly any extra room side-to side: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2atj_FM0AjA |

It depends on the technology with which one would like to shoot.
There are also technologies where one then shot forwards occurs. I hold 2 m for very little |
