I thought most of you probably already know how to do this, and either do it or choose not to because its unnecessary. But then I reckoned that some might not have figured this out yet so I took pictures while building my newest sling. This sling is made from scraps or trimmings of hemp from my other slings, spliced together. Splicing is also a good way to hide trimmed strings in tapered cords, or hide string ends in introduced cords. It won't work with cordage that is braided around a core such as nylon cord. Here's how:
To splice two strings within a braid together, untwist the ends for at least an inch and grab and pull apart the fibers: Place the unraveled ends together, press them together in the middle and twist them together. It helps to hold down the ends a bit if you can. If you do it right the transition will be very smooth: Continue braiding, making sure the spliced portion remains twisted. |

Hiding a trimmed end within the braid, or adding a new cord to a plait is very simple. Start by fraying the end of the cord you wish to add or hide. Then untwist its partner cord in the plait:
Put them together and twist back: Continue the braid. |

As a bonus, to make a whipped end, or if you like tying a half hitch at the end but don't want a bulky knot, fray out the strings at the end of your sling. Trim the fibers at an angle so that when you twist them back together they are also tapered:
Continue the braid until you can go no further and tie the knot. (Note: I had to go back and redo this. You will have to make the frayed and tapered ends at least twice as long as I have here.) The finished sling: |

That should be in the how to section. Thanks for that.

Title: Re: Short Splicing Tutorial Post by David Morningstar on Jul 29th, 2009 at 3:03am I can definitely see that being used for tapering neatly. Thanks! |

I use this kind of splicing quite a bit. I've used it with wool, linen, and jute, and It works well for all of them. It's the best way of hiding a splice in weaving that I know of.
Thanks for posting the instructions! -Timothy Potter |

No problem! I'm glad this was helpful to some of you guys.

I made a sling today so I could try tapering it the_warrior_yeti way. I am happy with the result. The only visible sign is a small amount of fuzz some places.
I will propably use this method on more slings in the future, it was rather elegant. timann |

Great sling Timann! The fuzz can be avoided with practice and persistence, but I got it in a few places on my sling as well.

Oh man, if only I thought of doing this with my tapered release cord on my "Baleric" sling, it would be much prettier. (And save me some stitching for reenforcement...:P )

Thanks, the_warrior_yeti, for nice words and tutorial. It feels like I ALMOST should have figured it out myself, but I did not quite do it. The fuzz on my sling is a result of the hemp I use, wich was a bit stubborn, and me doing it for the first time. Anyway it is of little consequence, compared to almost anything.
Donnerchlag, expect of lot of things like that. I have braided a lot of slings, and most of them is a little obsolete, because I learn something new, or get new opinions, all the time. Typical is when I desided to use a larger finger loop, when I desided to use a more distinkt taper, and when I desided to switch from a narrow grip with loop around ring finger, to wide grip with loop around middle finger. And now, a more elegant way to do the tapering ;) :D. It just mean it is time for making more slings :). timann |
