What about delaying activating the account? Have it be 3 days and then it will be usable. Or else in the first few days they can only make a certain number of posts, like 10 a day for the first 3-5 days. Then if it was a spammer, they couldn't make a ton of posts at first. I don't think a spammer would bother waiting before they could spam if there are other forums that wouldn't make one wait a few days before account activation.

unfortunately till we update the forum software there's not a whole helluva lot that can be done (and believe me i've been looking).
At the moment we're on yabb 2.1 - I'm hoping when chris updates to 2.4 there'll be a few more antispam options.

meantime just keep sending those reported spam pms :-)
