Likely such nets were adapted from fishing nets which were common to many cultures; it would have occurred to someone that a net would entangle an opponent long enough to deal him some mischief...
Also, a lot of these nets had weights around the edges, so they could be used in the manner of flexible weapons. The net and trident were a popular weapon for fans of Gladiatorial contests... |

Fishing cultures have used casting nets for centuries.
Nets are now being used by law enforcement and wildlife management with net guns like this http://www.instructables.com/id/Build_A_Net_Gun/ Google "net gun" or similar words for other pictures or videos. Tony |

generally a casting net is a circular net with small weights sewed in all rouns the edge. When thrown correctly the weights ensure that the net remains open in flight.
As for making one - matthias would be your man, is he weren't so elusive at the moment ;-) |

What if you tried the instructions for braiding a netted sling in the How-To section? Obviously you'd need a lot more string, but I imagine the idea might work.

hm this is going back to slinging but i have thought of trying to make a net that i could fold into a golfball or tennis ball sized package and would spread out a little bit after release. I thought of this because of these pesky starlings flying over my house (starlings are pests here), not sure how i would deal with them after they where caught though....

Ben-Aussie, if you has catched a starling, you just got TWO choices. You can release it far avay in the great outback, where it can never hurt human beings again. Or, you can eat it. One cannot simply waste such a resource.

I did actually think of eating them, though i would have no idea how to go about cooking them :-/

With fire. :D
I used to wrap dove and pigeon breasts in bacon and broil them. My father-in-law used to put all the breasts in a stew. I suppose if you REALLY go into it, you could roll them in batter and cook them up like fried chicken. K'Jev 8-) |

Percy Jackson and the olympians, battle of the Olympians ( book 4), percy was in an arena killing a dracenae he said that in one hand the dracenae was holding a spear in one hand and a weighted net in the other hand, so I'm just making a guess that they had weights like the balls on the bola at the corners.

I'll give a look and what do you mean by 'mature', do you mean mature like twilight or mature like everyone gets their head ripped off in a bloody method instead of a smooth clean kill? |
