Title: Failure... Post by castanon93 on Mar 22nd, 2009 at 5:42pm
I spent some time yesterday and all today's morning knapping an arrowhead from the bottom of a colored beer bottle (Indio, by the way :D) i finished a couple hours ago, and it definitely looked great, the best arrowhead I HAVE MADE by far. i followed instructions i found on these forums.
but while i was looking at it i dropped it (im clumsy sometimes), it hitted the floor and broke into four pieces. i almost cried from frustration, and with a lot of effort i resisted throwing them over the backyard wall. Now ive calmed down, collected the pieces, and thought, "why not posting these in the forums?, that way my work wont pass unnoticed and i can feel better" shame i didnt take a photo of it complete, but here they are. the first picture is how would it look like if it hadn't broken, but im missing a small chunk. The finger is there to give an idea of the size it has. Imagen018.jpg (18 KB | ) |

and this is just the tip of the arrowhead, it survived pretty well, maybe i could still use it?, maybe it still works for small game ? :-?, i put it against the window so you could see better. by the way, the fields you see are Oaxaca, at least part of it :)

8-) Nice point. the remainder looks as if it would large enough for rabbit or medium bird (pheasant, quail, prairie hen ... etc. )

Failure builds experience, experience increases knowledge, and knowledge is key to success. Failure is still better than not even trying.

The piece that you are holding up to the window, with a bit of reflaking would make a very functional arrowhead. Not only would it take down a bird but much larger animals. Size has nothing to do with they type of animal it could kill. It has everything to do with how well it penetrates the hide. Most arrowheads are pretty darn small and they can take down bison, buffalo, elephants, you name it. (Disclaimer: if shot by an experienced archer).

yes, I'm pretty sure super glue could, but
a) you might need to laminate the part in contact cement or something to make it good as new b) if it hits bone it might break. c)if the super glue is bad, and sorta dries rubber-like, it may resist against piercing |

Looks excellent.
Wouldn't bother glueing it - just make another one and don't drop it :-) |

Very nice work, castanon93.
I would not view it as a failure! BTW. Shouldn't you be quoting Zapotec poetry from down there in Oaxaca? ;) |

im more a conqueror descendant than an aztec/zapotec/mixtec/mayan/purepechan/toltecan/chichimecan/tlaxcaltecan descendant, not that it would be bad to be an aztec/zapotec/mixtec/mayan/purepechan/toltecan/chichimecan/tlaxcaltecan descendant.
i quote aztec poetry because i like it :). when i grow up i will return to the land of my ancestors, the iberic peninsula :D maybe visit the balearic islands sometime. |

best place to look for bottle bottoms is underneath empty beer bottles :-)

Brilliant logic, keep it up. ::) |

actually the logic's not terribly bad. go round to bars, pick up their empties, and to pop off the bottom, drop a fairly long nail into the bottle, put your thumb over the neck and shake it up and down. The bottom pops neatly off. (do it over grass, or you will have a broken bottle bottom, which broken bottle bottles are a bummer.)

when i said i couldnt find a bottle bottom i meant i havenīt finded a colored one ( i want a green one, it would look like a fantasy arrowhead :D) because ive seen it is easier than using a transparent one, i woyuld like having another indio beer bottle, cuz the bottom is very wide and kinda straight
