Title: Any Ideas What This Weapon Is? Post by Panday on Aug 20th, 2008 at 8:20am
Does anyone have any idea what the bodyguard twirling in "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" at 3:09 in this video? (always loved this song, by the way). It looks like knives on the ends of lanyards, or something (?).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiWuUAFI0ps It looks similar in use to the small kamas on chains which the Merovingian's henchman is using in this scene from "Matrix Reloaded" at 1:11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FneP5v7p71E Hoping somebody knows. Thanks in advance. |

to me, it looks like a rope-dart
many of the ones I've seen are similar in appearance |

A slender, pointy rope-dart, in my opinion.

I know the Japanese call them Kusari Fundo if there is no blade, and if a blade is on the chain, it is called a Kusari Gama. I have a variation of the fundo as a keychain. I used 3 feet of rope and short knoted it to a biner, and the other end is a melted knot with a u-clamp attached. Looks innocent enough, but that little weight on the end of 3 feet will go through 3/16 plywood very easily. Its my self defense surprise.

Hi Fritz, I thought you were forced to run to Canada or something :).
To me, it looks pointier than your dart, more like cross-bred bo-shuriken/rope dart. But the video is not clear enough, it's merely a flash of steel, not anything clearly recognizable... |

I'll look the video over agan . Looks interesting .
For a while I couldn't go to Canada as I didn't have my "greencard" . It took over two years to get one as there were some problems with an accident 22 years ago . Homeland security wanted to know ? Apparently no one cared . At least I didn't have to swim over the Detroit river . ;D Hows things in CZ ? I hope the Americans didn't install the new Radar posts....... Anyone making any Ropedarts lately ? |

Yep I know exactly what they are, they were developed by an Aussie martial artist .They are folding knives on leather or nylon thongs .They were feature in an australian martial arts mag when the movie came out along with several photos of them .He developed a number of weird toys on strings but those were what were in the movie.Oh and the bit in the hand is a toggle.

Actually they were developed a fair while before the movie came along , and they are folding knives , he also played with hatchets on cords and a few other things but the knives were what were used in the movie .I've seen a close up pic of the actual items and aside from blunted blades(for safety) they are a lock blade knife and nothing like a sickle.Besides the cords are considerably shorter then that of a kasurigama (up to about 30 cm/12 in). They are used to slash whilst in motion so if they resemble anything its a sharp manrikikusari.

you can make a fairly good rope dart from a rail spike here at http://funditor.110mb.com/arms.html
