Larrry Bray's granddaughter is two and uses a pink sling to hit the side of the barn.  I would say from the time you can throw a rock/ball on is a good place to start.  About 55 years ago my dad taught me and I was 6-8 at the time... I think he would have shown me earlier but was concerned about my having a weapon of that capability until I was a little older.  Wolf197 has a thread on the same subject... look back a ways and you'll find it.

Start by training thier grandfather as a friend of mine would put it. no age is too late to start learning the sling. It does help if the puil can stand, walk and throw.

daylight is best, seasons don't really come into it - don't sling if you can't see where the rock is going - though I would add if slinging in winter or autumn with wet rocks - use an aussie pouch. It won't get soggy and the mud doesn't stick either - so you can just put it back in your pocket no matter what you've been slinging :-)

The simple answer to when the best time to start slinging is :

                                                   NOW !!

Slinging is just like any other sport or physical skill if you start learning when you're young chances are you will be better than if you learn as a doddering old man. But you're 12!!

Just get out there and do it.
