Title: new bow Post by tomahawk54 on Dec 20th, 2006 at 1:13pm
I just finished a new selfbow. ;D
It's made of white ash, backed with white ash. it's kinda short, only 58" long with a brace height of 5". I'm afraid to try a full draw ( about 28-29" for me), but i'm guessing it to be about 45-50 at full draw. I have fired it several times at 2/3 draw and it seems to shoot very well. I will have pics up in the next week or so. |

Me too. My first effort failed after about 3 weeks of shooting, unfortunately. This new one is a bend-at-the-handle design, and is backed with silk. (old neckties)
The weather's been very rainy here, so I haven't had much chance to do any shooting, but so far it seems to be fine. I'll try to post some pics as well. |

Here's a pic of my bow, with one of my arrows as well.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6cc05b3127cce805f99adb6e100000016108AcNGzhu3bNn This one is red oak (same board as my first effort) backed with silk. I used old neckties from Goodwill, one of which still had the 60.00 price tag! These are applied with Tightbond III. With the limited amount of shooting I've been able to do (very rainy) it seems to be quite good. Pulls right near 50 pounds at a 28" draw. The arrows are made of hardware store dowels, 3/8" Ramin. I have a taper tool and some regular field points on order, these are fitted with .38 special "blunts". A fellow forumite on the Primitive Archer forum sent me a big pile of turkey and gray goose feathers, so I'll be making more arrows too. Next up is to start work on the Osage Orange stave I aquired. |

what kind of shape do you have going on there? I make board bows into the pyrimid style. I dont know if that is a good shape for a board bow or not but I like how it looks :)

That's a "flatbow", essentially rectangular in cross section. Directions are taken almost directly from Jawge's site:
http://www.angelfire.com/magic/jawge/boardbowbuildalong.html I've been able to do a bit more shooting, and this one seems very nice. Smooth and stable with little handshock. I'm hoping to get out to the local field range over the weekend if the weather holds. |
