that sling looks Sooooooooo cool :o nice colors too
how does it handle ? |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 19th, 2006 at 5:14pm
Thanks
The loop is a bit big. It is very stiff but I am sure it will loosen up. Other than that it handles very nice. I am going to make a shorter one based on either Baraks(sp?) or the ones Ben was selling. I love this round braid it has no strech at all. If any one was wondering about polyester yarn for slings it is horible for regular braided slings but with the round braid it works great with no streach. I want to use llama or alpaca wool for my next but cant find it any where. |

Wow, that's a beaut! It looks like the strands are tapered? Did you drop strands? Cored? or... Almost looks tapered to the point of starting to crack.
I like the colour reversal. Matthias |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 19th, 2006 at 5:33pm
On the releas cored I cut one strand out of the the core every 4 1/2 inches to taper it from 16 strands to 8 strands over 3 feet. It dose not crack which is good for hunting.
Thanks, |

Amras! :D
Splendid work! A round braid, you say? It looks like I'll have to put one of these on my to-do list ( which is already too long, but what the heck. ) The "finger" loop looks rather large and I wonder if it is a WRIST loop?? When I made my slings I was a bit wary of putting that much stress on one finger so I made my slings with a loop big enough for three fingers. This has worked very well for me. Also, just how big a rock does this sling take? Does it work well for different size stones? Thanks for posting such great pics! ;D .......Dan |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by siguy on Jul 19th, 2006 at 5:41pm
it will probably loosen up a bit, even more if you try to crack it like a whip a few times.
i made some really stiff hemp slings and then after just a handful of stones they were dramatically softer and less stiff. that is a very nice sling though. how long do you think it took you to make it? |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 19th, 2006 at 6:34pm
Thanks very much for all your compliments.
Dan, Yes it's a wrist loop. I could sling any thing from golfball size to softball size. It is a very vesitile pouch design. If you make one and you need help I will be happy to help you. siguy, I am not sure how long it took me but I here a simple one takes around 40 hours. I think I started it in Febuary but I got caught up in school and stuff so I did not work on it for a few months. Just started back up this month. I work on it for a couple hours or minutes every morning and night or so. I am suprized at my accuracy with this sling. I am more accurate with this than my 5 1/2 foot braided sling ??? |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by siguy on Jul 19th, 2006 at 6:43pm
perhaps it is the stiffness of the cords.
one of the factors that we discussed improves accuracy is stiffness of the cords and thickness of the cords. perhaps that is why |

Now THAT is a beauty of a sling! It reminds me of a sling I saw in the American Indian Museum in DC yesterday, in an exhibit of Incan people and one of the pieces was a ceremonial sling used in their dances that looked quite like that one. That looks like a fine piece of workmanship.

Beautiful sling! If you are looking for llama wool, try ebay and hit sites for Peru, wool. That should get you what you are looking for.

Many happy hours slinging with it. Willeke |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by nightweave on Jul 20th, 2006 at 5:24am
Hey Amras,
I know this may be a moot question but did you take photos while you were making it? And would you be inclined to write something up for the wiki. Oh yeah way cool, wish my braiding skills were that good. nightweave |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 20th, 2006 at 9:51am
No I did not take any photos wile I was making it. Maby next time. I will try to write it out on paper first and then get pics when I start my next one. I did not add strands so I dont know if I will include that.

Thank you. nightweave |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 20th, 2006 at 3:01pm
I started writing a how to on puruvian slings on paper and just finished. I planed for 14 pictures that I will get when I make my next sling. Would 14 pictures be ok or would I have to narrow it down?
|
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Willeke on Jul 20th, 2006 at 3:13pm
I am amazed that you can do it with as little as 14 pictures.
Use them, and more if needed. Willeke |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Bjärn on Jul 20th, 2006 at 3:50pm
That's an impressive piece of craftsmanship!
How far do you think it can send ammo? |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by nightweave on Jul 20th, 2006 at 7:10pm
Amras,
14 will be fine, and again thank you for your support. nightweave |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 21st, 2006 at 12:08pm
Bjärn,
I can easily through mediom wieght stones nearly 70 yards with it. It is hard to tell distance because I cant see the stones land, I only hear them. I started another puruvian sling last night and I am already a couple inches into the round braid. I am taking pictures this time. |

Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by nightweave on Jul 21st, 2006 at 10:42pm
No!!! put it on the wiki I have made a place for you. And you can up load the stuff there as well.
Instructions for uploading pictures: On the left hand side in the side menu called Tool Box There is a link called upload file Use that to up load the pictures. Then as for the article you can do one of two things. IM me the detail and where the pictures are to go (Plus name of pictures) and I'll do it for you or you could do it yourself on the wiki. It's on this page: http://www.slinging.org/wiki/index.php?title=Methods_of_making_Slings_%28Modern_and_Historical%29 If there isn't enough room I can even give you, your own page. nightweave |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 23rd, 2006 at 5:21pm
It is almost finished. I hope you all like it so far. I just have to finish braiding the release cord to get a couple more pictures and then I can finish the build along.

Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by nightweave on Jul 24th, 2006 at 4:45am
Amras,
That is brilliant, not only is it well done but you figured out how to use the Wiki!!!! Congratualtions on both counts. Keep up the good work. nightweave |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 25th, 2006 at 10:38pm
I finished my second one and got all the pictures I need so I will probably finish the how-to tomarow.
I found the the long weaves on either side of the pouch hinder the flight of the rock. I think the rocks ride on them when I release but I am not sure. I did not put them on my newest sling. I love these slings ;D I hope I get to see more home made peruvean slings in the near future. |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Amras on Jul 26th, 2006 at 2:42pm
It is finished. If there is any thing wrong tell me and I will try to fix it.
Or ask if you have questions on it. |

Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by nightweave on Jul 26th, 2006 at 6:01pm
Hey Amras,
Going into editor mode now so please be aware these are constructive and editor type things. Suggestions: Don't need first picture of sling if you have last picture of finished product. Had to look up what a Maru Dai is. An explanation would be nice for those not experienced in these things, like me. Would like to see links to either external pages, or if the lady Willeke is happy help out, internal links to basic braiding. (Or links to her site) Specifically where you mention the three strand flat braid, also the star, crown and diamond knots would benefit from links. Any time you use a technical term like weft you should either explain that term or link it. I know this may seem like a pain in the butt, but (ah funny butt but...sorry) those not in the know will put down your writing based on this kind of thing. A simple way to fix this would be a glossary of terms. I currently haven't gotten one as... well to be honest I hadn't thought of it and really the more I think about it we are really going to need one for the reconstructed slings. Staying in the constrains of the world of science and nerdy books, the standard measure is Metric. Thus if you are going to use inches you need to have the Metric measurement fist with the Imperial in brackets. I know it's a small thing but overall standardisation of the wiki is my aim at this point. The detail on half hitches is very interesting and would benefit from pictures of what a spiral pouch would look like. Unless this is a don't do it type of thing then it needs to be made more clear. With your bit about securing the strands are the tied of our just pulled through the braid? Coming out of editor mode: Ok, so now if you want I am happy to hunt around for the links for the knots or anything else you want me to link. Also will clean up your writing a little if you don't mind. On reflection links to Willeke's site and a Knot tying site will probably be more efficient than creating a page noone will look at. Willeke, Do I have your permission for this? nightweave |
Title: Re: My Puruvian sling Post by Willeke on Jul 27th, 2006 at 12:09am
You can make links to the said knots and braids to my website, but can also include a page with reminder pictures, (just the finished knots before tightening,) with links to my site. But with the way internet works (or fails) it might be best to include strategic information on the same server as the wiki is.
I will do a hunt for the right links within my site later, have to go to work pretty soon. Willeke |

Hey Amras,
I made a Puruvian sling with your instructions, and I can tell you for a beginner I am pretty pleased with myself. (I did a completely crap job but hey you get that.) I think with a bit of practice I could actually get good at making those. (Read it took me 5 days to make it.) I haven't tested it out but don't worry I get to this weekend. No photo's sorry it is not worthy turst me on this. Again thankyou for do the work on the wiki. I really enjoyed having ago at making the sling. Things I learnt making it: 1. Never use crappy old wool. 2. Always keep the brading tight. (I know but who listens the first time?) 3. I don't know how to do Half Hitches right. 4. Star Knots are tough to make. (Either that or I am terrible at knots.) 5. RTFM 6. RTFM!! That's it. Again thanks Amras, that was seriously cool. nightweave |
