Post by Hellfire on May 19th, 2006 at 8:15am
Here is my english longbow. Its about 65lbs at 28", 6' long, and 1 1/4" wide. Its fairly deep and the belly is rounded. Its got about 2" of set. I'm going to heat treat it, more on that later. g2g

Floor tiller.

He wasn't a target, I was just bending the bow and taking a picture to see how it was bending. I kind of wish there was more bow-builders or bowyers on the site. I wish english put up some good bow pictures.

There is a detail on the top two pics that wasn't intentional but it looks kind of cool. I'm wearing one large knife on my right hip, and I'm wearing a kukri on my left hip. Someone at school today said it looked kind of cool.

It shoots pretty good. I like it. It seems kind of slow with a light arrow but with a heavy arrow I'm getting some amazing pentration into boxes of sand.

I need to give myself more time to build more bows,  but I keep on getting orders for those darned muzzleloaders. ::)

That sure is a nice bow :)

I sort of finished mine, and have been trying for a while to get pics up, but the camera won't corporate.... this has inspired me to do so however.

What type of wood is it?

Pretty bow.  Very nice, good tiller.  What's the brace height?  It looks a little low - in fact, I'd set the brace height at about the draw you have in the first picture, maybe just a little less.  Should be about a fist's height, with an upturned thumb (a fistmele), as I'm sure you know.  But that's a minor problem, and it's not anything wrong with the bow itself.
I'll post some pictures sometime, hellfire, I promise.  But my bows are mostly getting old, and are not often used.  I've got one quite nice bow that I'll take photos of in the next few months, probably, once I've sorted out tint's crossbow.

The brace height is plenty high enough, about six inches. I like to shoot really heavy hickory and ash arrows, so with a lower more efficient brace height they will shoot better.

Round bellied bows are a lot of fun to make. Although they aren't ideal in terms of efficiency, they work just fine and will get the job done. 1 1/4" wide is pretty narrow for a 65 pound bow, so I think that 2" of set is ok. I am planning on removing almost all of it though when I get done heat treating it.

I piked and heat treated an older elm long/flatbow that was fairly low poundage. Now it is about 67" long, 1 1/4" wide, and about 55 pounds at 28". No set, its really a snappy shooter. I'm going to apply this heat treating technique to my elm elb I just made so I can up the poundage about fifteen pounds and lower the set.
