it's just that the tiny province of n.ireland which hasn't won a match for 4 years (except azerbaiajn) has beaten the mighty england team, full of overpaid smart-arses and poofs. a sporting triumph for the underdog. and since i am an ulsterman i would like to point out to the humiliated english team that they are all a bunch of poofs. poofs, d'ye hear? overpaid poofs!!! not much to do with slingng except for david and goliath, with a football instead of a stone. poofs.

Later: Ooh ... he's talkin' about rugburn ... err, furby ... err, what's the name of that game where you hold a riot around a big ball that somebody sat on?  ;D

I think I'll leave now before English decides to track me down and sling something at me...

Still later: Oy, I'm an idiot.  I saw an exchange in another topic where English was trashing American football (claiming it's a dumbed-down version of rugby, designed for people with fragile bones) and I came here, saw Sv's post of the scores and just assumed (a) he was English and (b) he was still on about rugby.

No, no, not English (nationality), English (monicker on this forum).

OK, I already said I was an idiot... Damn, now I've got both of them after me ...

hi funslinger, yeah, i'm northern irish. btw there was a picture in the "belfast telegraph" last week of a rioter shooting stones at the police using a steel tube.... they're close to rediscovering the sling, hopefully that last hurdle will prove too much, like with  chimpanzees and language.  glad you liked the north, there's a few good roads for motorbiking, but scotland and england are way ahead.

I'm not listening!!! SHUT UP!
We clearly lost on purpose.  Obviously.  To... uhm... raise morale in the troubled hell-hole that is NI.

  :'(

On the plus side, Sven could be fired.

Oh, they're not proper Irish in NI.  They're bloody prossies from the land of Scot.
;D
I kid, I kid.  I have nothing against anyone from the north.  But my gran, who is from Kerry, has a thing about the North.  I'd quite like to go though, I here there's some good buildings.
Cricket update:  Australia, last time I checked, 112-0!  For none out!  It's really really depressing.  Shane Warne was bloody brilliant yesterday, though, so good on them, I spose.  However, England are on about 350 (for six, for non-cricket literates.)

What that means is, England have finished their period batting.  They scored around 350 runs for all 6 batters got out by the Australian fielders.  Australia, still batting, have 112 runs, without any batter being out.  This is very good for them.  Australia, by the way, cannot actually win the Ashes.  This test, if they win it, will cause them to draw with England (2-1, with one test ending as a draw).  However, since they won the Ashes last time, if they draw, they get to keep it.  If England win, the England win and that's that.  I don't suppose cricket is followed at all in America.  If you even know what it is.  Anyway, it's the most relaxing sport.  Very little perspiration, interesting international teams (like rugby, cricket is played mostly in former parts of the empire - India, Pakistan, Australia, the West Indies.)  England are normally and famously terrible, but recently, they have actually started winning things.  And that's a summary of cricket.  Sorry sv, the cricket has almost over-shadowed your victory.

OK, I cannot speak for cricket because I know nothing of the game, but baseball is only partly a physical sport.  Most of baseball is done in the head, and much of it is done before the game starts!  For instance, one considers the abilities and recent performance of the opposing pitcher(s) when choosing the order in which one's own men will bat; if the pitcher is known to be a bit erratic, one will line up three of one's steadiest men, followed by a strong hitter, in the hope that the pitcher will walk the first three (because none of them will swing at a ball that they can see will fall outside the strike zone) and then the fourth might hit a grand slam (a home run in which one's team gets four runs because three men were already on base when the fourth hitter punches the ball out of the park).

... I'm sure that made perfect sense to all of you.  Never mind.  Let's just say that baseball is a MIND GAME.  Those expecting lots of physical action, will be mostly disappointed.

How about that... I agree.

Except about cricket. You have to get your head around a match being an epic battle, not just a silly little skirmish. We don't get much coverage here, and only a few people play, but I still like to watch. One day I'll get back to Barbados and watch the West Indies lose a few...

Yes!  A Canadian cricket fan.  Fantastic.  Yeah, you're right.  Matches are like epic battles - especially if they are between India and Pakistan.  That can get intense.  It would actually be entirely truthful to say that it is possible that either India or Pakistan could start a nuclear war if they lose against each other.  Cricket is the national sport of both of those countries, partly because it can be played with a few sticks and an orange.  What vexes me is why Australia even play cricket.  It doesn't make sense.  Here is the toughest environment on earth, populated by people who dislike "the pomms", complete pansies, and who play "Aussie rules", which is like rugby but more brutal, and they play cricket.  Mad.
I would agree with what you say, ben_banned, but slow sports are relaxing.  And there's nothing quite like it when you're playing cricket and you catch someone out with a catch.  But I also really, really like hockey, the fastest, hardest, most brutal sport of them all.  Variety is the spice of life.

english, of course we aren't proper irish, but instead proper ahhh hmmm, i don't know really but some of us fight anyone who says we aren't (even each other)
anyway i was born in london, my parents are scots, i was raised in NI in the church of ireland (despite being an atheist) which, confusingly, has a catholic rite but an anglican communion. so instead of saying "proud to be a Prod" i say "indifferent to being a european citizen currently resident on the island of ireland" this doesn't have the same ring to it, but allows me to take a cynical and detached view about people who actually think irish politics and politicians are important.
out of all the national anthems it isn't god save the queen, or the soldiers' song, but "flower of scotland" that moves me most. which shows that i'm not as sane as i would wish.
