Title: HOW DO YOU CARRY YOUR SHOT?
Post by SnapCut on Jun 21st, 2004 at 9:36am
How do you carry your shot (probably rocks)?
Even if you're at a river bank or a shore you still want rocks of a particular size and shape.  The need to carry shot is by no means overwhelmingly necessary but it does seem to exist to some extent everywhere.
I just sent to CheaperThanDirt.com for some more and different heavy-duty military shoulder bags to try out and use.

I went to the "Machu Pichu" exhibit here at Denver's Natural Museum (findings from an archeological dig in Peru).  In the gift shop, they were selling bags braided in the Peruvian style.  The carry strap is an honest-to-god Peruvian sling, just like the one Whipartist ordered for us a while back, and the bag is a simple pocket braided (woven?) from the same material as the sling, in complimentary colors and with complimentary designs.  That's what I carry my slings & rocks in (though I usually just sling rocks found on-site).  It's about the size of a large purse or small duffel bag.

Somewhere in here are posts regarding a "Shepherd's Bag" made of leather.  I think there are even instructions on making your own.

I don't carry them in places I know I 'll find some, but in places like near my house, I just carry them in a normal bag, because I'm not going to buy a braided bag to go outside my house to sling.

But if I'd go to a camp to sling, it'd be cool to have a braided/leather bag to carry them.

Either in my pockets or just in my hands

I use a shepherd's bag I made from 4 ounce double split leather.  It works great for an abundance of carrying duties including stones.

Generally, though, I try to find a place to sling that has a ready supply of stones.  They get heavy to carry around.

See this thread for my bag:http://www.slinging.org/forum2/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=1;action=display;num=1068268113;start=0#0

It sounds nice I would like to see it. :)

I have some leather I'm planning on using to make a sling pouch. The shoulder strap, about 2" (5cm) wide will form a large oval, my shoulder at the top, the pouch at the bottom. Two letter 'D' shapes about 10" by 10" (25cm x 25cm) attached to either side of the strap at the bottom will form the pouch. Pretty simple.

Knight,

Most craft stores carry leather.  I think wal-mart, or at least certain ones, carry it.  You can also order it over the internet from http://www.tandyleather.com/.

If it makes you feel any better I'm 17.  I think you can get a sheet of leather that's about 8 X 11 inches for around 10 dollars.  Craft stores like Micheals, Hobby Lobby, etc. should have it.

O.K., I finally swiped... er, I mean borrowed a digital camera from a friend, so here's the bag I was talking about.  Check shoulder strap.  It's got a finger loop and everything!

Knight/ZaQ, keep your money in your billfolds kids!

My best-performing slings have pockets made of 2 strips, each 1" x 7".   A picture showing how they're assembled is on this site somewhere.    Material from a scrapped belt would work better than craft-shop leather because it's stiffer.   For cords I use 1/8" white nylon cord.

I think distance-champ, Yurek, has even used this pocket design & declared it OK.

I am slinging thread around, most to Project Goliath, but a lot go to other topic too.
Cleaning up from the time we had just one or two sections in the forum.

But some topics fit here but deserve to be read again, those I sometimes move up.

If you find that a moved posts is in the wrong section, let me know and I move it again. (If I agree with you, that is.)

LH, I'm gonna have to try that method. Up til now, I've just been tipping my head sideways, pounding on it a bit with the heel of my hand, and well tumbled stones come popping out of my ear.

Two or three stones in my back pocket usually does the trick. Belly bag if I need to carry more.

Hi.
I use a cotton bag with shoulder straps.
It is a confederate havresack I used to use in my civilwar
re-enactment longago. :)
On a normal day I just carry my sling in my pocket and use stones I find on site.

I was at a place called Ann's Linens or something like that and I passed by what looked like an oven mit but it was square. Basically, it was a rectangular towel folded over and sewn to stay like that. It works perfectly because it hold quite a few rocks and it has a little loop where I could pass my belt through. If you didn't get my description I'll get some pics up asap.

I use a british army respirator pouch. It holds a maximum of about 80 stones although i cant run with it that full. It has several small internal pouches just big enough to store spare slings but the shoulder strap is quite thin and cuts into you if there is a lot of weight carried.

I usually just carry a handful of rocks or two to wherever I'm slinging and then just collect rocks from the area of the beach where I happen to be slinging. Right now though, I'm working on making a bag from a groundhog skin that I got from someone in partial trade for a sling, that has the hair on it and everything. It should be big enough for a couple of pounds of rocks and fired clay ammunition. That and the sight of me running around with an animal hide on my waist hurling rocks around should be quite a sight!

at the moment i hace a little hideaway set back in the woods behind my house that i use for my primitive tech and stuff area.  that is where i have a small shelter set up and what i call my ammo dump.  there are several large rocks back there that are about the size of half of a small car (or at least that is how much is above ground).  there is a shallow in the middle of one of the biggest ones that i fill with the stones that i pilfer from the huge bunch of gravel up the hill that belong to the back of an autobody repair shop.  i use a couple of bags and carry back 20 or 30 pounds of rocks at a time and dump them all into the shallow in the rock and just take from that.

Here is my how i carry my rocks. I made this with some bark taned leather and some duck cloth.  I have found that the strap is not wide enough and it digs into my shoulder when i have a full load of rocks so i will make a wider strap for it. I am also thinking of engraving somthing in the leather.
Tell me what you think.

i like that.  it's nice.  maybe instead of making a whole new shoulder strap you make a slider that slides on over the stap that is a wide padded peice of material that you put across your shoulder.  it is comfortable and you can just slide it off and use the naked strap if you want to.

I now use a fannie pack that can hold a significant amount of stones from "Station Casinos".

I would never cared to carry all my stones! :P Much easier to just find a place with stones, usually nearby the river. But, when I do carry my stones, I use a small bag from a pair of jeans. ::)

I don't know if anyone caught the post about my bucket, but I was only joking about it doubling as a urinal and a martini shaker, it's just for my slinging stuff. It's one of those ''ice melt'' buckets and it has stood the test of time to say the least. It is a good idea to spend a half hour collecting a cache of good stones so you don't have to bother when you start slinging. I poked a few holes in the bottom so I can use it as a giant ''spaghetti strainer'' for rinsing muddy or sandy rocks.
