Title: Interest in slinging t-shirts?
Post by Chris on Sep 14th, 2003 at 12:22am
I was wondering if people would have any interest in buying a sling related t-shirt?  There are plenty of places where you can order custom t-shirts in smaller quantities for a reasonable price.  It could be as simple as a sentence, or we could add graphics.  There could be text on the front, back, pocket, sleeves, you name it.  Any color of the rainbow too.

I'm not saying anything definite yet, but if there is enough interest, I'd organize it.  People could submit quotes or designs and we could vote.  There's enough registered members on this forum to make it economically feasible (but that number is only a fraction of the visitors the site gets per day just looking for information).  If we rounded up 30 willing people, it would be cheap.  Basically, just give me some feedback and let me know if you'd chip out 10 bucks for a shirt.

Chris,

Great idea! You guys figure out the design and put me down for two. I'll mail the check as soon as you give the word.

Definitely a good idea Chris!

I think we should hold a contest for the T-Shirt design/quote.  The winner of the contest would receive a T-shirt for free.  You could raise the price of the T-shirt $1.00 to accommodate the winner (we wouldn't want you to have to fit the bill).

A voting system is the only difficult thing to work out.  I've seen many polls on other websites that would work well, but they don't keep people from voting twice.  Hmmm.... ???

After the contest, you sure would have a nice item to sell on the website!

Anyway, just some ideas.

People could post in a forum thread for the winner.  Sure people could register more than one account.. but come on!  Are people that desperate to want to cheat on a slinging t-shirt?  :)

T-shirts would be open to everyone (non registered visitors) too.  Once we have a design, we'd let people order for a few weeks to bring the cost down.  And then I'd place the bulk order.

Doesn't necessarily have to be a design.  It could just be text if someone comes up with something clever.

Chris

Title: Re: Interest in slinging t-shirts?
Post by Chris on Sep 16th, 2003 at 4:44pm
Two possibilities here.

Im thinking of a twist on the first one.  Making the people and sling and text all white (silhouette) on a black background.

Btw, I'm including "slinging.org" in the designs, but it's not a requirement.  It what ever people want.  Please comment, and of course, submit or explain your own designs.

Chris,

If we get a good design then I'm certainly in.  I prefer something historical to something comical, though those designs are cute.  I have a few thoughts.

Slinging.org may become more than a website.  It's the basis for the slinging community in the English speaking World right?  Maybe we could come up with a logo.  Something cool, masculine, powerful.  Who knows?  And the logo would be great for a t-shirt.  Infact it seems maybe we have a logo.

I think this logo would be great on the T-shirts.  Or if we want to change it we could.

Or else, I really love David by Gianlorenzo Bernini.  It's a great statue though this isn't the best picture of it.  I have a much better one on my hard drive I could send you Chris if you're interested.  It's at a better angle too.  Of course I'm biased here.

                                         Ben

Chris,

This is cool too! Very nice.

The problem with photos is they are hard and expensive to reproduce on a t-shirt.  Plus, it might look a bit cheesy.  I think it's a great idea, but I think it would be hard to pull off a professional look.  We really need crisp text and a logo/graphic that can be applied to a solid color background.  Several of the mock images i've posted in this thread are applicable.

We need to generate a bit more interest to make it economically feasible (~30 shirts is my goal).  So lets keep ideas and comments coming in.

Also, what are peoples thoughts on t-shirt color?  We can choose anything we like.  Color printing is obviously more expensive.
My vote is on black or that sweatpants sandy grey look with white graphics/text.

Chris

This should give you an idea of the selection:

Or perhaps even in the colors of the site.

A light tan for the T-shirt and dark brown for the lettering.

I like the sandy brown color for the shirts and Dark brown for the logo.  I would definitely say that "slinging.org" should be on it somewhere (and prominant).

I really like your designs Chris.  As for the statue that Ben posted, I think what he was getting at (and if not, what would be the most feasable) would be a stylized, single color illustration of the statue that held large blocked out areas of color, but still allowed for easy recognition as to what it was and which statue (for those familiar with art).  All in all, there are some great ideas coming out here.

Sweet!

I like the side profile guy.  How did you you make/find it?

I tried to make a quick draft of my G-Design thingy.  It's rough.  I think it would be better to make the sling a bit shorter and the guy bigger.

Let me know what you guys thinks about Yurek's and mine.

Yes I do. It's my work, but... not all. I'm only the shadow of the ancient artist who created the sculpture of Zeus (or Poseidon) of Cape Artemision (Euboea). :)

But seriously, I found the photo with the sculpture of Zeus in Google.com.

http://arthist.cla.umn.edu/aict/html/ancient/GS/GS048.html

Then I took the outline (just the shadow :)). Next I was plaing with the graphical program. I changed the position of his arm and the wrist a bit. Added the sling, text and the colours. I endeavoured to keep the climate.

Chris, I really like Your site, it's tasteful and interesting. My expresion in English is rather poor and a bit dificult for me. So I use pictures for the contribution sometimes :)

Yurek, you've got the skills and programs to manipulate these images better than me.  Could you use your image, but change it so it's an underarm throw like mine.  My tweaking of it isn't so good.  Then I can incoperate in the G effect and the slinging.org font.

Chris

Title: Re: Interest in slinging t-shirts?

Chris, I suppose You overrate my capability to transform this profile. I'm sure I couldn't make it better than You. It is difficult to get a good result from this figure. It would be probably easier to draw new one, but I'm not an artist. Sorry Chris :(

If I find a better pattern I'll willingly send it to You.

Ok, no problem.  When i get a bit of time, i'll try to make a more finalized version.  People need to post feedback about which ones they like.  Im not going to put in a few hours tweaking a design people aren't interested in.

Dan Taylor emailed me the following design:

Title: Re: Interest in slinging t-shirts?
Post by JeffH on Sep 21st, 2003 at 5:02pm
I sort of like the last one here from Dan Taylor.  Try the text reduced under the image and shorter but fit to the length of the graphic.  Maybe bolder text in this scenario.  This would give the graphic a base on which to sit and make the legless thrower more intentional looking.  Maybe also shorten the sling to a scale length of a bit less than three feet.

Additionally, I think this would look good as a large, back-of-shirt, image or small on the breast.

I like most of the designs, the character of this one stands out to me though.

Hi All,

I propose we have a long sleeve T-Shirt with the elongated "slinging .org" on the sleeves
(using the one with the slinger just left of the "G" and the  dot of .org being the stone)

On the pocket we could use the more square shaped Slinging.org.

On the back we could have the Dan Taylor tpye slinger and the words "Stone Age Ballistics" and "Just Sling It"

??????????????????????  David

Title: Re: Interest in slinging t-shirts?
Post by Chris on Sep 25th, 2003 at 5:50pm
The slinging.org down the sleeves might look cool, but I'm not sure if people are equipped to print there.

We could print all over the place, but the cost is going to be extraordinary.  My vote is on something simpler.  I'm thinking a graphic (like the slinging.org where the dot is the rock) in the pocket area and a quote on the back like "Just sling it" or "got sling?" or some other catch phrase if we can come up with (and agree) a good one.

Also, it looks like many of the regular members are keen, but we need to order something like 20-30 to get the price per shirt down (and more is preferable).  There are standard setup fees you see.  Lets keep this thread kicking around for a while longer to catch a few more perspective buyers.

I know they can print on the sleeves without too much trouble but as you say, cost could be the issue with too much printing. I may get Dan (He is my brother) to make me up one and post a picture of it.

Just wanted to let you know that progress is being made regarding slinging shirts.  I'm exploring several possibilities and I'll keep you posted.  Once I select a company im satisfied with, we'll move ahead with finalizing a design.

Long sleeve tshirts would be cool  8) I'd buy one if it's a decent price...

I like the looks of these two -

the only thing I might change though is reduce the font size of the .ORG so it doesn't stand out so much, just an idea...

And it would be sweet to get one of the Biblical passages regarding slinging on it  :)

My $0.02 :)

Thanks, guys.  I also like the idea of the passage on the shirt.  Let's see what Chris thinks.  It could be hard to get that much on the shirt.

I still like Dan Taylor's legless man.  It has a great feel to it.

I think that a logo on the sleeve will be hard to read and expensive.

I would really like to have a shirt, nonetheless.  At first, I was ambivilant, but now I am excited about the shirts.

Any chance of making slinging.org hooded sweatshirts? They'd be perfect for the upcoming winter months, and why not give them as gifts to that aunt or grandmother who always knitted you that three-armed sweater every christmas? (Love you too, Nan!) And besides, they would have that cool pocket in front that would be perfect for hiding rocks and/or slings ;) Personally, just for simplicity and cost's sake, I'm all for keeping the design simple, down to something like the silhouetted man whirling the sling above his head and slinging.org below him and across the yolk of the back. But, whatever the design, yeah, count me in for a shirt!

Have you considered utilizing a service such as www.cafepress.com?

Several logos and style of items could be offered and interested parties could choose from among them - from shirts to mugs to bumper stickers. Items could be set at cost or a small mark-up charged which could be applied toward maintenance of slinging.org.

I know there were some issues a while back regarding intellectual property rights at CafePress, but I believe they've since settled that.

Spreadshirt (www.spreadshirt.com) is an alternative to CafePress. Spreadshirt seems to have only clothing, but more choice in that area, and it lets the user chose which logo to put on the item and where to put it. This way, you can have multiple logo options and multiple clothing options. I think their t-shirts are a little pricey (~18$ I think), but it's a nice service if you want to use something like that.

I have taken it upon myself to have my brother make up some t-shirts for me. I am paying for them and will post a picture of them if anyone is interested. I asked Johnny Shumate to do some of the art work and he sent me some neat stuff. I know Chris is busy and it has been guite some time since we talked about t-shirts so I just went ahead and did it for my own use and anyone else that may want one. I still would order one that everyone desided on when they are available.

No ofense intended, but I would have to pass on one with the fair tale picture of the evolution of man.

Here are two designs I made to go onto an "athletic grey" colored shirt.  The "Slinging.org" brown that the forum logo (top of this page) has for its background isn't available as a shirt color.   I always imagined the logo would be printed around the pocket area (but a large back print would be cool too).

I have high resolution versions for printing.  I can email these over to you if you want.

"Just out of question chris chris what sizes could we get? And what would the shirts cost?" - Gun

Shirts would cost around around 10 dollars.

"I was thinking instead of a shirt we just made iron on ones so everyone would be happy with the shirt that they pic. Just a thought" - Gun

I've never had much luck with iron on ones.  They always disintegrate.  If we print up shirts, they'll be professional silk screen printed.

Also, the site won't make money off the sales, but I think it will generate some good advertising.

Maybe for a logo we could have a cave art painting of a slinger, or something primitive and simple. A lone slinger slinging on top of a mountain would look cool too.
