Title: New Sling to replace my old one
Post by cyphur on Oct 7th, 2026 at 5:26pm

My first braided paracord sling was getting old and beat up so i decided to give making a new sling a try, this one's got all the parts i liked about that sling (double fingerloops, nice split pouch, tape wrappings to protect the most beat up sections of cord from abuse). I also decided to make it very easy to break down into 4 separate components (not including cracker) so I can always just swap in new replacements if any portion of it breaks or gets super worn down, since I grow very attached to my slings and yes the Ship of Theseus is the same boat.

I've not gotten the chance to give a proper test but its slightly longer then the old one and much lighter since the retention and release cords are both just a single strand instead of 4 braided cords, so I expect to get a bit more power/distance out of it.

Anything flaws I might've not thought about? looking forward to giving this a try in a big open park so I wont break anything if i find that my knots fail, but having given it 2 throws yesterday, it doesn't feel like it would take on the forces needed for that. I also haven't gotten it to crack, and I assume that's cause its lighter.

The extra speed comes from a quicker/cleaner release from the pouch.  So expect the sling to feel like it's releasing early.  It's nothing bad.  Your release timing or body position may just need a little adjustment to conpensate.

It may just be how the picture looks, but the cracker appears to be more substantial than the release cord.  If that's the case, the sling isn't likely to crack.  It's all about increasing the speed of the cord, just like a whip.  If the cracker is heavier/thicker, it will just slow the release cord down.

Thank you!

Yeah, I was looking into stuff about crackers earlier and found that out. I made a new cracker that only used two of those paracord gut strands and while I still haven't gotten the chance to give it some throws, I could get it to crack just by whipping the sling like I could with my last sling, so here's to hoping  ;D

Yep, good looking sling. Beware of super long crackers.  They can whip you across the palm of your hand causing much pain, cursing, and a nasty welt.
