I was out on a disc golf course with a few friends today.  It's at one of the local college campuses.  It's a small 9 hole course, and once ever year we play through it four times in a row and call it the 'marathon'.  My one buddy is much better than I am.  In general I'd gauge myself definitely below average for disc golf.  But on our last round he had some bad throws and we ended up tied at 2 under par.

As a tiebreaker we decided to do a disc vs. sling distance shot (which we've done a couple times in the past).  His first throw went wide so I told him to do it over.  I went before his second throw and got the golf ball out there pretty well.  Admittedly I'm not much of a distance thrower.  I was using one of the newer SR3 slings from Pan, and I'll say they're great for golf balls.  That throw was literally just my second shot ever with that sling and a golf ball (the first was 4 hours earlier right before we started our rounds).  And then my friend had a much better second throw.

We measured his disc first (using a measuring wheel) because of it being easier to spot.  But we still missed the straight line by a bit.  With our slightly curved path out to the disc, the distance was 428 feet (130.5 meters).  We found my golf ball and decided to measure it back to the starting point and then measure his disc again now that we knew where it was.  I walked the wheel back and got 421 feet (128.3 meters) for my golf ball.  I was feeling pretty good because I though the initial curved route to his disc would have added more than 7 feet.  But it didn't.  I measured his disc again and it hit 421 feet right on the money.  I just started laughing.

The thought of taking the measurement down to the inch crossed my mind, but I think we'd definitely be within the error of that measuring wheel.  I was also exhausted after 36 holes of disc golf, so we stuck with the tie.  We'll definitely do it again the next time we're out there though.  Try to record it too.

And yes, seconded on the SR3 overlapped pouch style for golf balls - that was my go-to until I designed a sling specifically for golf balls.

Add me to the tie!  My longest golf ball throw with a 29” seatbelt sling was 421 feet (140 yards) too!!!



To keep the coincidence going, it is funny you guys both say the exact same as me:

A) yes, I too don’t do distance golf balls (only did a dozen throws one time) because I quickly found out they go twice as far as tennis balls…..and I am too tired to walk that far to get them!

B) if I did practice, I think I could sling farther…but since I don’t practice I add “qualifiers” such as “don’t do this often” to my distance.

C) The one time I slung golf balls I immediately thought I should build a custom sling just for golf balls.
