Title: Experience with Esparto
Post by PorzerMatze on Jun 11th, 2026 at 5:32am
Hi y’all

I‘d like to braid a authentic Ballearic Sling and have heard, that Esparto is a very good and authentic material for it?
Do you have experience and is there a good source for raw material in Germany?

My first search had a Spanish shop as a result, that pays 600-700g in one pack.
I don’t know, how much I do need for one normal sized sling..

Best regards
Matthias

Mattias, it was not possible to make a sling out of an Epaulette. But I made it from wild Yucca leaves and Coconut fibers. I really enjoyed weaving Yucca leaves. The sling turned out to be very tough and sturdy. Try to weave, even if it doesn't work out the first time to make a good sling, but you will get invaluable practical experience, and no amount of money can buy it.

Hey!

Thanks for your nice input! I‘m share that it is able to braid sling from any natural fiber.

At the moment I‘m braiding my first „authentic“ sling from linden tree bark. I‘ll show you a picture of the status quo.

But I saw a very good tutorial of how to braid a balearic sling on YT and it says, that Esparto is very perfect for it, so that’s why I‘m asking.

I will also try horse hair 🙂

Best regards, Matthias

I like the natural color of your lime bast. We have a lot of lime trees growing, we will need to weave one too. I think if you comb it properly, you can get strong and fine fibers.

Most of my braided natural fiber balearic slings are around 50g, so I'd guess roughly 100 g of material to make a single sling (as thick as one's thumbnail, ~1cm).

Thank you SnowSerg 🙂

And thanks for your assessment, Iron Goober!

I think I‘ll give it a try someday.
But first I have to finish the lime bark one 😁
I‘ll make a different post about it, when it’s done. There where several people who asked about it.

Best regards
Matthias
