Title: Another sling & shield video
Post by joe_meadmaker on Mar 28th, 2021 at 6:13pm
I've got another sling & shield video.  Slinging ice balls again, but with a whole new twist.  Enjoy!

Joe, I think your videos need a "do not try at home" lol. Great stuff.

That was too entertaining to watch lol. Reminds me of a game my uncle use to play with bow and arrows and a motorcycle helmet haha. Shoot straight up and try to bounce it off your head... Their game is more fool hearty, I would be curious to do a mock sling skirmish, with shielded slingers on each end of a football field launching foam projectiles, and maybe have a capture the flag game tied into it. Could be fun

Hey man, as long as I've got a couple snipers like you and IG watching the flanks, I'll stand on the front line.  8-)

I've got several videos planned out at this point.  I have to say the danger and destruction is only going up from here.  ;)

That is all kinds of crazy.  :D
And I like the skirmish idea.  The problem is having enough singers in one place at one time.  The whole idea of the pitchback net was to simulate an incoming sling projectile.  It's definitely not in that category because it's very close range and slow moving, but it was a fun experience.

We have done such battles many times.  If you want to use tennis balls, you have to cut them open.  Injuries occurred while fighters stepped on tennis balls during the scgkacht.  Some fighters fell as a result and injuries occurred.  This does not happen with a slotted ball.  You just kick him flat.

Wow you are full of great ideas Joe! Is it weird that after watching this I want to have sling fights with shields? Im pretty sure someones going to end up in the hospital but it sounds like a blast.

That's a good idea.  That should also soften the hit of the ball because it will be able to deform much more.

@Morphy - I would love to do that so much.  I think if we used Jaegoor's cut tennis ball idea, danger would be pretty minimal.  Just need to keep the throwing speed low.

That would be pretty funny though.  Imagine someone walking by and seeing a bunch of idiots with shields in a field, slinging tennis balls at each other.  ;D

Great video! They bounced back a lot better than I expected them to. I might be able to make a similar video soon...

We do such fights with tennis balls more often.  In the gym.  We have two fronts.  Sometimes we also set up cover.  You don't have to shoot at full power.  It makes a lot of fun

I can only dream of doing that  :'(

Even with the returns being fairly slow, I would not want to get pelted by a constant barrage of ice balls... let alone stones or glandes!

Great video as always Joe!

As hard as those ice balls were hitting at such a low speed its not hard to believe large stones would shatter that shield in no time. Or ones arm.

Might be a bunch of idiots lol, but we would be havimg more fun than anyone else in the vicinity hahaha. Oh yeah, I made up some ice balls last night btw. Now I just gotta find somewhere to use them before they melt lol

Yeah, "idiots" was definitely meant in a light-hearted, 'other people will think we're crazy', kind of way.  :D

That is the one downfall of ice.  It doesn't travel well (except in winter).  I'm fortunate enough to have a good sized yard, so it's right outside to sling.
And forewarning, if you do find that ice balls work well for you as a projectile, there can be significant space in your freezer that gets taken over for just that.  ;)

The entire top shelf of our freezer is reserved for ammo. The price I pay is that occasionally my wife uses the ammo in her drink.

Haha we plan on getting a deep freezer for food, so the main freezer can be for our sugar glider food, and now also ammo. She wanted to try getting a couple gliders, ended up with 3. Then adopted another two locally from a lady who couldn't handle their care needs. So it takes tons of frozen fruits and veggies to feed them all... veered a bit there sorry haha

Magnificent slinging, btw. Is it possible to keep the sling in front while slinging, or do body mechanics preclude this ? I've tried with a one-handed buckler (from extended to close to the chest) but not with actual throws

Thanks Thearos!

I'm guessing that was a mistype and you meant keep the shield in front while slinging.  I think it could be done to an extent.  What you would lose is the rotation of the upper body (or at least the range of the rotation), therefore causing a loss of power.  The next time you're slinging, hold your arm in front of you like you're holding a shield.  Then try to keep it there while you sling.  It makes a big difference.
