Hello all,

I'm a peace-lovin' urban hippie who is sinfully living with a traditional archer/survivalist/hunter. You would think we wouldn't have much in common, but ha-haaaa -- our interests dovetail in making stuff from natural materials. I used to make hemp jewellry, and now I've found much more interesting things to make with my knotting ways.

I've braided/knotted (i like mixing it up) our first sling based on designs I saw here (awww... bay split pouch) and perhaps we can take the time to test it out tonight with some tennis balls at the baseball diamond. I've always thought slings were cool, and even tried making them when I was young, but I had no resources and no clue how to do it right back then. I hit myself a lot with my contraptions. Hopefully with all the expert info here I can change that.

Next up... more slings, maybe some bolas and, when I un-rust my knotting skillz, sandals.

The story about having made slings when young, without much success, is my story too.  This is the right place to change that.
And slinging is the pefect hobby for knotty people.

I was an unsuccessful slinger while young and now that I'm older I'm still unsuccessful; but on a much higher level of craft... I'm here for the fiber and knot wisdom.

I've already learned so much from lurking here for a few days. My knowledge of knots is still fairly limited to the sturdy and useful square knot, half hitch, and a number of decorative knots, but it's growing.

Timann, my first sling is based on a picture of one of yours -- the 12-string braid with split. Only I finished with suqare knots to hold cut ends, finishing with a tapered fishtail braid (4 strings).

Square knots over a core of twine makes an excellent split pouch. Like making a friendship blacelet.

True dat masiakasaurus. My next sling is going to have that feature for durability. I'm currently working on that one, since I foresee us fighting over who gets to use the sling soon. Practicing was a blast tonight -- we're hooked! My partner is a natural... he slung with enough force to split a tennis ball against the shed, and wedge another in the chain link at the baseball diamond. Unfortunately, that was too high up to climb to, so the next project for him is a throwing stick to retrieve wedged balls lol. Me, I'm more of a dirtball thower. Way weaker, but my aim was better than I thought. I actually sent them all the right direction!
