Title: How would ppl react to a zombie infestation? Post by little on Oct 3rd, 2010 at 12:03am
Personally I think it would be chaos, panic, and everything else; you'd expect things to work out just because u might think u know what to do, but what if they weren't what u expected? They could be harder to kill than u 1st thought, then again this is fictitious, but what if it really happened anytime soon in a hypothetical situation?

first of all, since we're humans, our first thought is to tell ourselves we're dreaming, it's some politicians fault, and start blaming each other while the zombies just watch us. then those who survive the riots are probably going to slowly die out, until all that's left is the few that can survive (people who know survival skills, are resourceful, or can fight for what they need), or help others survive (smart thinkers). then the remaining humans go to war with each other and the zombies. finally, I'll be alone in a cave with a massive stockpile of beef jerky waiting for it all to finish. :)

it all depends on where the outbreak is. if its out in farm area, we have nothing to worry about, farmers have it under control.
if a city, run for our lives. mass hysteria bassicaly. |

lol lucky im in Alaska, like in resident evil extinction they all wanted to go here, but I dont think we're safer than anyone, im guessing ppl have more than one gun like I do 5 guns for me so we're good i think, but we have the busiest airport in the world, so infections would have no problems spreading all over the place.

Actually some epidemiologists with too much time on their hands ran simulations, and even the best case sims (the old fashioned slow moving "braaaiiiinnnnssss" variety) is catastrophic; humanity will be wiped out in a short period of time (exponential proces).

I find it hard to swallow that Anchorage's airport is up there among the world's busiest, but I can't exactly disprove it, either. What source is cited for that claim?
As for zombies, I think that the movies that show them being fast and vicious are full of baloney (although entertaining). Like the guy said in "Night of the Living Dead": "They're all messed up!" They'd be slow and stupid -- because their organs and muscles would be rotting! I think many people would die because of being unable to get themselves to "kill" zombified loved ones. It would be too traumatic. |

Hey I don't care who they are, they come back from the dead and start eating people, their head's coming apart...
I live way out in the country next to a dairy farm. My first priority would be forming an alliance with my neighbors, building a earthworks wall and protecting the cows.... Once we had that under control, I'd form up scavenging parties for things like medical supplies, toilet paper, that sort of thing. If it's your classic shambling zombie infestation, a brisk walk should be enough to get you away from them. Then your only problem is getting cornered, or other survivors... |

especially other survivors. i know a few people who can easily think tactically (reenacting as commanders occasionally, chess, etc), yet everone would still follow the popular, person, or the best person they know. and A business CEO with a doctorate will not be better in this situation then a gangster in some far off third world country who never heard of school (which in this case would be better). but who are they going to follow? |

dangit I meant to say one of the USA's busiest, not the world, top 100 in the US
http://www.forbes.com/2007/03/22/worlds-busiest-airports-biz-logistics-cx_rm_0322airports.html in forbes, it says one of the fastest growing cargo airports next to ones in Asia, other areas do better in # of passenger terms, its a possibility that we get soo much cargo is that we're not so accessible as in the lower 48, there is only one long highway from downstates to here, and so lots of cargo everyday. |

Title: Re: How would ppl react to a zombie infestation? Post by peacefuljeffrey on Oct 6th, 2010 at 9:03pm
Well, in "28 Days Later," the hazard was from INFECTED people, who had not actually DIED. Being infected might have sped up their metabolisms, giving them that speed and power. They were capable of attacking without any personal regard for hurting themselves, because their rage overrode any self-concern. Imagine how hard you could punch a wall if you hadn't a care for how much your hand would hurt afterward. That's the "infected."

Title: Re: How would ppl react to a zombie infestation? Post by Donnerschlag on Oct 8th, 2010 at 2:08am
I think a significant amount of Zombie-related deaths in the event of a zombie outbreak would be because of two things:
1. People would confuse themselves with the protagonists of their favorite zombie game and end up overestimate their own abilities. End result: they bite off more than they can chew/get too bold/try something that should never be done IRL and quickly become zombie fodder. (And only adding manpower to the undead legion's ranks.) 2. They assume that the zombie coming towards them is either "just some dude trying to scare them" or whatever. Whatever the reason, it gets them nom'd on. (Probably only in the very early stages of an outbreak.) |

Title: Re: How would ppl react to a zombie infestation? Post by Conor147 on Oct 8th, 2010 at 2:19am
in order for a zombie outbreak to be viable, the zombies must kill AT LEAST one person for every one among them that falls while attacking the uninfected.
for example, i have a 2 1/2 lb hand axe in my room. if i hear a zombie outbreak has started, i will grab it and kill zombies that try to attack me. i could kill at least a few before i make a mistake or get charged by a massed group of zombies and become infected myself. if everyone is as physically awesome as me, then a zombie outbreak wouldnt work because it wouldnt convert enough to make up for its failed conversion attempts. so for that reason i think a zombie outbreak wouldnt work. and then the army comes in, one clip of an M16 can take out at least 10 zombies. so for every 10 zombies lost to a soldier they only get 1 zombie back. (this is just an estimation) its funny how in zombie films or games theres always zombies ALREADY THERE. and over the course of the film or game EACH SURVIVOR KILLS HUNDREDS OF ZOMBIES. did everyone suck before then or something? lol. |

Title: Re: How would ppl react to a zombie infestation? Post by little on Oct 8th, 2010 at 2:25am
and then there's always someone who trips and doesn't get up for like 20 seconds and just lays there and screams, and they always run slow, and someone always has to mess up something and kills the whole team or community. it seems in an emergency everyone loses all common sense.

however, in a large place of gathering like say... a military base, mall, etc, would be easy targets. even if a third of the people fought back, it would just go to fast. you get two, those two get more, then it just goes on exponentially. |

If you recall, in Night of the Living Dead, it was "mysterious radiation" that was causing people to become zombies -- and ANYONE WHO DIED for ANY REASON became a zombie (unless, of course, the death was caused by the type of head trauma that renders zombies permanently dead). The black guy in the original movie dies of a gunshot wound in the basement, doesn't he? Later, he is shown to have "turned." I'm not sure, but I think that in NOTLD, if you were bitten, you would get sick and die, and then zombifie. But if you died, say, of a stab wound, you'd come back as a zombie, too. And those who were already dead before the radiation event also were coming back to life (e.g. the man at the cemetary who had already been dressed for his funeral). |

Is a heavy, unwieldy chunk of sharpened metal your only defense against zombies? Bladed weapons get blood and bits of flesh stuck to them- that spells infection. As mentioned above, people overestimate their abilities. Just because a zombie goes down with a hit of a crowbar in Left 4 dead 2 doesn't stop zombie chunks from infecting you. |

I have grown even more weary of VAMPIRE movies. ESPECIALLY the ones that are based on the idea that vampirism is caused by a "VIRUS." The implausibility factor goes WAY off the scale. I mean, if you accept that vampirism is a CURSE, then you can accept that it can make a person transform into a bat, or have hypnotic or telekinetic powers, etc. If it's a VIRUS causing it, though, how the hell can a virus cause someone's teeth to change shape at will? How can a virus enable someone to move so quickly he can't be seen? (I'm thinking specifically of the "Blade" and "Underworld" movies.) I'm sick of the writers just using "virus" for every damned thing. |

Also, the usual spelling (at least, the one that seems to be offered as "preferred") is "ax" without the "e." I have a small Gerber Camp Ax. It has a plastic shaft that they say is "unbreakable." I have it in the side case of my motorcycle. In a pinch, it could be used in self defense, or to clear a path, or as a hammer. I put a nice edge on it, too. |

and in dawn of the dead that news man gets stingy of the mall and doesnt listen to that black cop and goes nuts when those biker dudes invade the place, gets himself killed and turns into a zombie; and since in that movie they say that zombies rememver certain things, that news guy remembers their hideout and goes upstairs with all those other zombies.

since you probably use some million cells for just a few thoughts in one second, and there are quite a few receptors as well i guess theres a low chance a full thought might be recalled. if this does happen i think i would be best off with a spear as self defense, then to a gun. a spear is just for reach (why even let them get close enough to attack you), because otherwise anything that cuts and you can use is fine. |

Title: Re: How would ppl react to a zombie infestation? Post by Cthulhu on Oct 8th, 2010 at 11:51pm
depends... i assume we would have the "rage: type zombie or something similar (perhaps a parasite that lives in ones brain and keeps it's eggs circulating in your blood), and would have greater strength and speed than normal people ( because their bodies would be running at near 100% capacity when hunting, I assume).
I believe that, if it were only Me, 2-4 friends/certain family members, i would be fairly well off, only because i have a 12 gauge and am a good shot when moving targets are involved. I would stay at my house, move all supplies upstairs. I would seal all doors with wooden boards and plywood in our basement, close all curtains, bolt all doors.destroy the staircase and hopefully most of the floor of the ground level. seal all the windows, pad everything with blankets and sheets, creating a sound-proof, smell-proof barrier, while maintaining surveillance with some video equipment i have lying around powered by a small dynamo ( i have the supplies to build one in my room). we would wait for several days until the hysteria died down. depending on the level of infestation, be send out parties to systematically clear our area of those infected, or if it reaches large-horde level, blare an evacuation message any means possible, and burn the city to the ground piece by piece. If possible, best solution is to wait it out until the zombies starve from exertion ( higher metabolisms, would die quicker if starved). |

honestly I wouldn't know what to do, I'd be pretty scared, but i have a lot of guns, at the most right now I have 1050 .22 rounds, should be enough at close range, I have 3 .30 cal rifles one of em is scoped, I can hit stuff at 500m no sweat, prolly better to shoot at closer range, no wasting ammo; but Id be happy to have 100s of rounds of ammo and go to a tower or some high place and pick em off, hopefully they wouldnt be super-human like, or smart, id be happy with romero style zombies; dumb, slow etc...

That's one thing I really liked about Zombieland. You'll notice that Tallahassee never re-used a hand to hand weapon. I thought that was a nice touch, especially if everyone's been zombified by a variety of mad cow disease.
