Title: Aquarium Question Post by Rat Man on Sep 26th, 2010 at 8:40pm
As a lot of you know, I inherited my mom's fish when she passed. I have a 25 gallon (I think) octagonal tank with one Angelfish and one very large Goldfish. How often should I do a 25% water change? It's been a long time since I've had a tank and I forget. Thanks.

Dang -- I thought it said "Aquaman question," so I was hoping someone was going to explain how anyone could like him as a superhero. :-/

Yes, I was always a Spiderman or Incredible Hulk fan myself.

Before there were superheroes there was Tarzan of the Apes. Real heroes don't wear Lycra.

I guess if I'd asked a question about Aquaman I'd probably get advice on my aquarium.

Thanks, slingingrat. Obviously, these fish have a lot of sentimental value and aren't allowed to die.

the answer is slowly.
Although when we had a fish tank (certainly wasn't grand enough to be called an aquarium) I just used to syphon off about half the tank and then replace the rest with tap water mixed with water conditioner. The most important thing is not to let the temperature change too quickly. Always try and replace room temp water with room temp water. I just used to mix a little hot with the cold. But don't forget the water conditioner - that's pretty important. A really good filter system will negate the need to change water too often. Fishtanks are fun, but they can be a real lot of work and expensive things to have. In the end our remaining fish got donated to the tank at a local vet's surgery. We had a plecky that was just getting way too big. Until we win the lottery and can afford a huge tropical tank with lots of critters (no fish just things with legs or shells or anemones) I'll happily stick to just the pond in the garden. |

Thanks, c_a. One of the biggest sources of failure I've found is adding new fish. You get everything just so, get your tank and all of its living things to an equilibrium, then you have to go and add a new fish. Sure, it came from the aquarium/fish store and it's supposed to be OK, but it has some sort of disease which decimates every living thing in your tank. Then you have to start over. The one thing I remember is DON'T ADD ANY NEW FISH UNLESS YOU HAVE TO, like unless you're down to almost nothing anyway. That's my biggest advice to myself or anyone else with a tank.
