Title: adding leather tassels
Post by Cthulhu on Sep 26th, 2010 at 5:05pm
so i have this 3 strand balearic style hemp cord sling i made a while back that I have been using for a while now. I have had to retie the release knot about 3 times, and now it broke off again, taking an inch of cord with it

. I was wondering how i might go about adding  leather tassels to grip so i don't have to shorten my sling?  I already tried wrapping the leather twice around the end of the cord and adding whipping, but it fell off after a few shots.

any suggestions for extending the life of my sling for a few months?

tie knot in cord at the very end .... set knot with glue .... wrap leather above knot and whip to hold in place.
Knot should keep whipped leather in place...

The same happened to me recently with the release knot tearing off my 3 strand jute cord. Because it was only a short sling with a leather pouch, I just remade the release cord by itself, but also had a small bit of leather cording spare aswell. What i did was just added this into the braid at the end, as if you where braiding grass or plant fibers. I then just tied a knot tightly at the end and now my tassels are strips of leather instead of jute. The difference in the whip crack is huge, and there is no damage to the tassles at all yet even though generally I would ruin the tassles within 3 throws with jute.

I reckon braid the leather in at the end, giving it half a centimetre of braiding before you cut off the rest of the jute. Good luck mate!

whip the end with some leather pieces tucked in
