The word is that it is going to be very bad.  It looks to be a direct hit and the wind speed is the highest we have had in many years.  It is suppose to land very close to Hong Kong tonight or tomorrow morning.

Strange enough the weather is still calm as ever today.  I just played tennis in the sunshine.  The waves on the ocean looked like moving mountains though, so we know it is coming for sure and preparations are being done.

Personally, I got off very easy, basement just became flooded.  I set up a pump, and all is dry now. (in fact, that's when I discovered the huge thing of leather :):))   Just down the street though is like the photo in that article.


And good luck with the storm! How bad are typhoons like that... I mean, what kind of damage is expected? I really know nothing about them :-/

Hong Kong is much better prepared for typhoons than most other places in south-east-asia.  There will be flooding in some areas, damage by the wind, but most deaths (if any) will come from land-slide.  Sometimes a part of a hill could slide and fill houses with mud, drawning those trapped inside.  that is due to the way the city is built.  A lot of areas were developed by "cutting" a hillside in half to create flat lands which result an unnatural slope and unstable soil (because the trees are gone) on the hills.

I think in general typhoons are a little weaker than hurricans.

Glad to hear that the flood didn't do too much damage to you, Cando.  Let's hope it will go away soon.

Would that neither yourself nor anyone dear to you be touched by this whirlwind, though it will split your city in half.

      If I recall correctly, a while ago you posted some video of slinging in HK. I really enjoyed this little bit of "vicarious slinging." Gorgeous scenery, too! Needless to say, I hope you folks in HK don't get slammed too hard, but I just looked at some satellite images on the web and it looks pretty grim. That is one big mother of a typhoon
:o ! There are 6 billion people on this planet, but this website has only a few hundred members. We need to have all of our slingers safe!
       You had mentioned the danger of landslides. Where do you plan to ride out the storm? Are you right near the water or will you be inland a little bit? Are they going to open ( strongly built ) public buildings to use as shelters? Do you have any emergency supplies ( food/water? )Believe me, nobody here has forgotten the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Katrine last year and it is best to be cautious. Stay safe, Tint.        Where exactly are you, anyway? I live in Gardner, MA although I work in Worcester ( and I own property in Fitzwilliam, NH. ) Aside from the fact that we are sick of the damn rain we seem to be OK. About the only trouble I had was on Route 140 near Mount Wachusett. Do you know the spot where you have a nice view of the mountain because you are looking across the reservoir. The reservoir that is slightly HIGHER than the pond on the other side of the road. As usual, there was water ( about an inch deep ) flowing across the road yesterday as I was driving to work at about 2:30 PM. And as I was driving home after midnight the water was about 3-4 inches deep. As usual, they had the signs out and I know this road so I went through it slowly and  my engine did not stall out.                        
     We have been watching the news reports and I know some peple have been hit HARD! I hope there wasn't too much damage in your basement. Can you believe this? Two weeks ago it was so dry we were having brush fires!

 I actually haven't been out that far west on more than a few occasions- I live on the coast and spend a lot of time up in the middle of nowhere Maine and NH. (can't get a lot more specific than that lest my mother somehow end up reading this)
Most of the local stores and schools are closed, but except for Route 1, the major roads are open. Towns like Peabody (which are below sea-level and next to rivers) are completely underwater.

And thanks for the concern everyone. Let's just hope that Tint's ok.

The Typhoon had changed course and it going to pass by Hong Kong on the north-east.  The weather is still pretty bad but there shouldn't be much danger to the city.

You guys were truly blessed, that was a monster of a typhoon!  The damage would have been enormous.

Parts of Australia were pounded twice recently and America will not escape lightly during our Hurricane season this year.

I bet it was all that pollution.  The typhoon was just repulsed by it. ;)
 Nah, I'm kidding, I hear Hong Kong is quite a place.  And Hong Kong films are the best in my opinion - Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, Bruce Lee, and now Chow Sing Chi... Real stars.  I'm glad to hear the city is fine.  I should be in Hong Kong in Winter 2007/08 for a week or two.  I'll be in China from September 07 to September 08, with plenty of holiday, so I'll try and pop down.  I'll try to get out from Beijing to Xinjiang via Gansu, down through Xizang to Yunnan, Giuyang, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and then round the bottom of China to Xiamen, and follow the coast to Shanghai, to Nanjing, and back to Beijing.  Could take a few months.
 We've had droughts here in England.  Well, I say droughts.  It's raining right now.  Very heavily, in fact.  But overall, drought is apparently here in the south of England.  Hardly a disaster, of course.
 I hope that everyone can get through any difficulties facing their region. :)

I live on a monster of a hill way far inland my basement doesnt flood or anything. But we did get some hard rain for like 5 min. My yard looks like a hayfield it hasent been mowed for like 4 days. I hate to see the yards of otherpeople i mow for, im going to have to rake them :-X

I'll definitely try to stay on the site whilst travelling, and contact you, tint.  It sounds a little stupid, but watching movies like "Hard Boiled", and "The Killer" (you know, the good John Woo movies) has made me think that Hong Kong is a really beautiful place, so I'd really like to visit. :)  Also, a pretty violent place, but I have a feeling that image is a little untrue.

There are only a few beaches where I sling and most who saw me thought I looked stupid. :P

There is a very tight regulation regarding weapons here.  But I think in general the city folks of Hong Kong just do not enjoy outdoor activities.
