Now that the Holidays are upon us I would like to know how to make or where to obtain some real MEAD. Come on all you Vikings out there. I know you have the answer, so lets hear from you. :D :D

Mead is made from honey, water and yeast. I usally get it from my Kindered or even from my conclave(group of witches/pagans)

Phone the big liquor stores (bottle shops) near you. Some of them always stock it, some just this time of year.

Folk festivals and Renfairs are a good hunting ground too.

Here's a great rescipe I found in a book.

4 1/2 lbs Honey
1/2 gal water
1/2 gal "no preservatives" fruit juice of your choice
1 lbs Raisins
1 packet of wine yeast

Boil and dissolve the honey in 1/2 gallon of water. Pour the hot fluid over the chopped raisins in a big, almost sterile bucket. Add 1/2 gallon of 100% all natural fruit juice of your choice. When the mixture cools, add in your packet of wine yeast. Cover the bucket with plastic and a rubber band.

The problem with honey is that it takes a bit longer to ferment. I'd give this rescipe a month or so to sit, but it's probibly drinkable after two weeks or so.

The easiest way to "sterilize" your bucket is to pour boiling water through it a few minutes before you pour your stuff in.

I like adding citrus fruits/juices to my mead. I've made quite alot during the last year, and some of the stuff I made almost 10 months ago will be drinkable now.

Mead is easy to make... and the above recipe will work fine... but what you will learn quickly is WHY BOTHER?  It tastes awful on a good day... and it is worse on a bad day.

There is a reason you don't see mead for sale today at 7-11.  It isn't that anyone has forgotten how to make it.  It is just that beer and wine are 100% better.

Rather than getting into mead... discover the joy of hard ciders.  Apple and pear cider knock mead off the planet... and the alcohol content is higher than beer.

I love apple cider. Dont get mead at the beer stores, its no better then white wine, and about twice the price.

I have had some mead made for me once, and it was very sweet i thought it would be bitter like beer but it was pretty good.

I hear that!! I add two pounds of brown sugar to a gallon of Trader Joe's brand apple cider, using Lavlin EC-1118 wine yeast.

All my friends were officially knocked on their asses.

If youre a viking fan though, youve got to have the mead sometime.

I personelly can't stand the taste of wine or most beers, mead I do like (good scotch too!!!) try your larger local liq. store. Chausers Mead isn't bad and is fairly cheap, but if you have a local Viking all the better.

If you just want taste and "knocked on the ass" effects, try making hobo jug wine.

Awhile back I made something I liked to call "Hobo Lemonaide." Follow your basic lemonaide rescipe for a gallon, but add a couple more cups for sugar and a pinch of Fleischmann's baking yeast. It wasn't all that bad, and it did get people drunk.

Actually, I am making about 5 gallons in my garage right now. Well, maybe saying that "I have 5 gallons of what might turn out to be mead in my garage" would be more correct. I used about 15 pounds of honey dissolved in 5 gallons of water, and added yeast nutrient and a packet of lalvin EC-1118 yeast to the mixture, which admittedly, was a little hot for the yeast, I probably ended up killing or stunning most of it. So, I took a gallon the other day, and heated it up to 140 degrees and added it back to the 4 other gallons to get a 5 gallon mix of 83 degree solution, and pitched another packet of yeast into it, this time at the perfect temperature.  That was two days ago, and the yeast has cooled to about 62 degrees. I still don't see any more evidence of fermentation in the jug outside of a semi- beer like smell, some very light fizzing noises coming from the jug like you hear from a glass of pop and some very small bubbles rising along the side of the container. I have to shake it to get any bubbling from the airlock. Anybody know why my mead may just be sitting around?

Most major super markets with any decent wine selection has mead.

I don't understand this resistance to white wines. Granted I am more a red wine, and porto drinker, but I must say I've had some great white wines. It is particularly important, not to generalize wine IMO. I've had good and bad of almost every varietal I've ever tried. It simply takes experimenting, and that is part of the fun.

I live in Davis california, roughly less than an hour from napa, and only 30 min from the nearest winery. I've had the luck to be able to taste from the growers themselves, and I have been shocked out more than one opinion on so many occasions that I feel a open mind is the best way to go.

When all is said and done. I highly suggest getting ahold of some aged tawny port. Don't get the cheapest you can find, or it'll taste just as cheap, but if you get one within a reasonable price you won't be dissapointed.

yeah i bought some white wine mead. It is bad. I hope that real mead doesn't taste that bad.

A little too sweet for my taste (of little of what I have had).  Everyone else said it was good ::)
