Hello, buger!
"Coons" you say? Why do you ask? Are you going to lie in wait and ambush a racoon and kill it with your sling? Hmmm...an interesting experiment. Let us know how it works out.
I can tell you that here where I am ( north-central Mass and southern New Hampshire ) racoons are very common but not often seen as they are largely nocturnal. Oddly enough, we've had up to six or seven on the front porch at 3AM on several occasions. Mother racoon and little racoons. This is what happens if you leave a garbage bag out overnight and probably explains why they seem to be more common in town than out in the woods.
A couple of times I have seen a racoon out by the side of a dirt road (and yes, there was a stream nearby) in the daytime (but this is rare) and it appeared to be acting normally. But be careful. Over the years there have been many reported cases of RABIES. We had a RABIES epidemic in the racoon population several years ago, but eventually it "burned itself out." In other words, almost all of the racoons died of RABIES.
                           R   A   B   I   E   S.

Well, now that you've been warned....... based on my limited experience, you could attract racoons by leaving bait (food scraps or garbage) out for them, but they most likely show up only at night.
Hope this helps.                                               .......Dan

P.S. I've known guys who would hunt racoons with .22's but this was also done at night. I've never tried it, myself. Racoons do have a nice pelt, though.

coon go where the food is. If there is something along the road way the would travel it, but if the caught wind of something else the would follow the scent.

You can call coons too. Try a wounded bird call.

I would think they would travels TOWARDS water. And this is off my own limited wildlife experience, but all animals need water, some, like fish, more than others. But we all do. Racoons, or as they are called in French, "Le raton leveur" (meaning "the washing rat") lack salivary glands as some neat little artifact of their evolution, hence they are forced to wash much of what they eat in water to compensate for lack of spit with which to wash and digest the food. So, I think they would need, like all animals, a constant supply of water. But do they travel away from water? I think they just go where their nose tells them food is, really. Like me!

hey ya know whats neat, i was reading that theres lots of thjoghts of why coons wash food, it said one guy found out they had a lot of saliva, but the scientest said it was just a habit, cause he gave one some bread and it diddnt dunk it in water

Could you maybe call them "RAcoons"?  What with all the political talk, I thought maybe Buger was trying to recruit for the Klan, and that just isn't what we like on this forum.

thats it, ive had with you and cando, ive called them coons all my life, its faster  than saying raccoons, if u were here and called me racist bad things would happen to u, i have black friends, how do u flippin get off saying that

Buger,
No need to be nasty.
For people who have learned english as a second language, or even third or fifth, it is hard to understand when you use short forms. I have to puzzle on much of what you write, and my english is much better than that of some people coming here.

So help us please and write as good as you can, and try to use the full name of things at least once to explain what you are talking about.

Willeke

What exactly did CanDo  even do? As far as I've read, he hasn't posted on this topic, and asking to call them raccoons, instead of coons isn't a big thing. we're a global forum, and not all of our members speak english quite so fluently as those of us who have lived in North America our whole lives and so it is important to take into account a more limited proficiency towards regional jargon when posting. I thought you might have been referring to either raccoons or african american people before I read the post, and I have lived in the States for most of my life.

English that was uncalled for, a bit confused about Buger going off on CanDo, but "I thought maybe Buger was trying to recruit for the Klan" statement and this was after you calling him a hick is like I said uncalled for.  No need for it.
Maybe this is what Buger was angry about, not asking him to write "racoon", that would have been too simple.

Buger:
Please remember that there is a great difference between written communication and face-to-face conversation.  Lots of non-verbal clues that you depend on when face-to-face, are entirely missing in print.  So if someone does not understand or misinterprets something you write, it is a bad idea to assume that the other party is thinking bad things about you or calling you names.

Unless of course they make it clear that they are doing so.  English was doing so, MammotHunter was not, in my opinion.  MammotHunter merely stated that he was aware of both meanings, and you will note from his first post in this topic that he went with the "animal" interpretation.

When I read your post that started this topic, I thought of the animal "racoon" (commonly called a "coon") simply because I have never heard that word used as a racial epithet. Were I aware of both uses, I would be confused: there is nothing in your first post, to indicate which use you intended.

Now, I am presuming (from how hot under the collar you are getting) that you are aware of both uses and resent the implication that you were talking about "people of color" or blacks or Afro-Americans or whatever the politically correct term is these days.  But if you are aware of both uses, and since the words you write are the ONLY clue given concerning what you mean, you might have either used the full word "raccoon" once, or in some other fashion clearly indicated that you were talking about an animal (as opposed to a man, for those of you who misperceive man as "merely" an animal, but that's a whole 'nother discussion that is off-topic in this thread, so I'll quit).

Anyway ... on the other hand, English might have picked a slightly  ::) more politic way of expressing his misunderstanding of what you said.  English, however, likes to pick fights, so he inflammatoriness (there's gotta be a better word than that) must be seen as deliberate ... in which case it is still upon you to be the better man and respond calmly.

English:
Shame, sir!  You are intentionally picking a fight, by assuming the more pejorative meaning of the term.  Were it not better to simply ask which was meant? ... But if I am wrong about my inference concerning your intention, please say so.  Since I have accused you publicly, I will then apologize publicly.

English,
You may be 'technically' correct, yet you really shouldn't try to instigate things like that. Keep it to PM's if you feel it's necessary, sooner or later everyone else is going to get sick of you and buger fighting over trivial things.
Honestly,{ugh, not saying it's true)  it looks like you scanned through this trying to find something to start a fight about.

Buger,
Don't allow yourself to be so easily antagonized. While I understand that it's common where you come from to stand up to a fight, while here, try to keep your cool, debate intelligently instead of just 'shouting'/whining.

I do agree that you should try to make a bit more of an effort while writing, but that's just your decision... it may prevent more conflicts like this.

Willeke,

English is my first language and I still have a hard time understanding some of his words. One tip is to read it phonetically. So while something may say 'are' he actually means 'our', just dosn't know better. And yes Willeke your english is much better than some... :):(

Woah.  Big reaction.
Maybe I should have put a little smily there...?  I didn't really mean that buger is racist at all, it's simply that the word has a recent history of being used to describe African-Americans.  Awful sorry fellas.

This, however, I don't understand.  I live in the 'burbs in a middle class family in England.  I'm honestly joking when I say things like that - I've got nothing against country folk, and I appreciate that in many ways, country living, by trapping and hunting, could be said to be dying in some areas.  Sorry Buger.

Raccoons, by the way, spend most of their nights hunting along streams, and they are also excellent climbers (their hindfeet can rotate 180 degrees so they can actually walk headfirst down trees.)  If I were you, I'd try a large scale pole snare for raccoons - if it works for squirrels, who also climb up trees readily, it should work for raccoons.  They have excellent hands, too, meaning they can open doors and do other such interesting "primate-like" activities.  Also, remember that they eat anything.  You could probably bait a trap with another animal's poop and it would come. :)  (Maybe not.)

English,
I reiterate my remarks about the differences between written and oral communication.  Yes, a "smiley" would have helped. "Emoticons" in general are helpful as an attempt to re-add some of the nonverbal cues missing from written communication.  Face to face, you give clues to your listener about whether you are speaking seriously, or jesting.  In writing, the listener can have no clue concerning your intent, unless you deliberately add such clues.  The style of the writing can supply clues, but that is not as reliable, especially in an international forum where English is a second (or third, or fourth, or ...) language for many.

It seems that you were not picking a fight.  I apologize for so accusing you.

Buger,
Realize that the reader, in written communication, should allow for the fact that he is missing some cues about the writer's intent.  You could have asked him what he meant, rather than assuming he was being insulting.

Both of you are at fault, in different ways.  Cool off.  Learn.  Write, and read, more carefully next time.

But don't feel too bad about it.  Many of us, including me, have made this same mistake.  I offer advice not because I am wise, but because I got burned the same way a couple of times, being a smart-aleck by nature...

Any way back to topic. Racoons have a routine. A route of travle that usaly takes three to 7 days to complete.
back when I was snareing nutria, In oregon I would often see a pair of racoons at almost specific spots at at specific dumpsters on certain nights almost a year later I noticed the "coons" were sticking to the same routine

   Hi, buger,
My understanding is that racoons will eat ANYTHING, just like the pesky squirrels I am dealing with now. People like to think of them as cute and cuddly but in fact they are essentially "eating machines."
We've had racoons on the front porch at 2 AM tearing through garbage bags to get at the grease soaked cardboard of old pizza boxes!
Damn nuisance.
As for the acorns, I do believe that all oak trees do produce acorns, but it is not quite that simple: it turns out the acorn crop can vary considerably from year to year with almost no acorns at all some years to very large quantities in other years. Thus the acorn crop is cyclical and this is a normal natural phenomenon. You can get information about the acorn crop from your local deer hunters as the whitetail deer love acorns, especially white oak acorns which they love above all other foods. Deer try to fatten up to survive through the winter and it turns out that white oak acorns are the richest energy source.                                                             .......Dan
