hellow, i guess iam asking these is cause i found an old survival book,so are all turtles edible, how would i skin and cook um.

Turtles are more trouble than they are worth for the amount of meat involved. Stick with rabbits.

ok ,but if i saw one and ate it would i get sick or not.id of course cook them

To the best of my knowledge, you can eat just about any turtle around here. None are poisonous. They're just a hassle to clean.

Eat frogs not toads, and just the legs after you skin and wash them thoroughly. Tastes just like chicken :P

if a primitive type from the mountains was even going to go near a turtle, they would maybe make some stew, but the real prize would be the shell.  shells were pretty prized even in the times of the american settlers.  they were sometimes used as semi-directional lanterns by tossing the belly and using the shell to put a candle in, hanging from something.

if you are really interested in finding out about something, i suggest doing a google search, and then coming here for tested theories, tips, etc.  usualy you get better, more helpful responses if you ask specific questions, like about a certain recipe and the like.  just a hint.

Stick to Bullfrogs, there's no meat on the smaller ones.

Most of the fresh water turtles in north america are carnivorous. They are also quite hard to kill and fingers look very inviting to them.
Oh yeah and snapping turtles are also bloody fast.

There is a reason they don't feature on the regular diet of any predator. Too much bother.
So if you insist on going after freshwater (oceanic turtles are pretty much protected species and should never be eaten) turtle get some chainmail gloves and be very sure it's dead before you go anywhere near the head :-)
Unless of course you want a new nickname - seven fingered buger for example :-)

Also bear in mind snapping turtles can reach weights in excess of 100kg. And at that size it's debateable who's hunting who.
These things are near enough alligator proof - so be careful.
