Alright, I think I'm a bit stumped  ;D

My sister-in-law is training to be a nurse, and apparently part of her course is to solve a certain puzzle for some reason or another. Apparently, however, the puzzle was given with no sort of explanation at all as to how to work it. She came to me for help on it, but I'm not really sure how it works. I've tried everything I know for it, but just can't seem to get it. Has anyone ever seen one of these?

That sorta looks like a sudoku puzzle, but lacking the traditional 9x9 rows. My GF is a sudoku nut I'll ask her when she wakes up.

Yeah, the first thing I thought it was was a sudoku, until I noticed that it was 8*8 and didn't use the number 9, as well as the top saying [1-8]

It would seem that the same number can't be in the same row/column, as in sudoku, but I'm not sure about the rest. The way it is divided(thicker/thinner lines) is puzzling as well.

It is a form of soduko, it is a 8x8 grid that does not duplicate any given number in a row across or down. tell her to have fun

it appears to be a cross between a traditional crossword puzzle and a sudoku puzzle, but i am not sure.  i would suggest trying to solve the puzzle as an 8x8 sudoku puzzle.

If you use 8x8 sudoku column/rows and require each sub area to only use numbers in order from smallest to largest (or vice versa) it solves to a consistent, single solution. Pretty big logical leap though, as there is only one (well sort of) group with more than 2 initial values.  :P

Without some secondary "rule" to apply, there are too many ways to interpret this - applying sudoku constraints is a bit iffy too, but it seems the most likely (and isn't ruled out by the initial set)

My GF liiked at this mornng, and said that it doesn't have much logical sense to it.

She did point out that it's obvious where the #1 should go but non other.

Ah, thanks Matthias! It makes sense, following all the rules made for it. I had tried blundering through it, but I think I got a 5 in the wrong spot, causing me to get stuck. I'll give her "the rules" and see how she does. Thanks again, everyone who helped! :)
