Title: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by narya on Mar 8th, 2006 at 4:29pm
Hey! I need your critiques (and ideas).

I designed/uploaded a personal website some days ago, and I would really like critiques and ideas... and, if somebody is really bored, I would REALLY appreciate a correction of the english version of the site (sure there are lots of mistakes I do not find).

http://naryart.webcindario.com

Thanks in advance!!

I got the tablet this Christmas, before it was all "mouse"...

And yep, all colouring is digital... but I do lots of outlines (and let's not talk about sketches) on paper. It's easier than the tablet.

Glad you liked it!

I think your site is very nice. You are a very talented woman. Are you going to do any slingers? :)

At least, I'm going to try... but I'd need photoreferences  :-/ Suppose this is the best place to ask for them.

So, does anybody have any pics that I could use as photoreference?  ::) ::) (Bambi eyes)

Very cool narya!  I'll spread the word for you and have my friends visit your site.  It would be great to see a photoshop picture of slingers!  Please let us know when you have one on your site.

There are many photos of slingers in the gallery section of this site, especially the media gallery, You may find pictures of palestinain slinging in war zones :o.  Check them out, they might be good reference for you.

Look what you've made me do  ;)

Any problems with anatomy, pose, movement, anything?

I am very impressed. Did you just fire this off or did you have this picture laying around already? :o

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by narya on Mar 8th, 2006 at 10:34pm
I've just done it now. I looked for the photos on the gallery, and there was one that actually looked good enough to try to use it... and that's the result.

Well, this is just a "sketch", the colour version will be (probably)  better... and will take more time and effort.

I am amazed that you were able to draw such a fine picture sooo fast! W0w :o

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by bigkahuna on Mar 8th, 2006 at 10:57pm
I also like the way you sign your name in Elvish (Sindarin)? :D

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by Tint on Mar 8th, 2006 at 11:00pm
You can draw faster than we could sling!

narya the "quickest draw" among slingers! ;)

I think the picture was very good.  Packed with action.  One can feel the slinger moving her feet and swinging the rock at the same time waiting for the right moment to let fly.  If I have to be ruthless, i'd say her facial expression seems a bit odd.  Is she in  a confrontation? or is she just praticing?  is she skilled? calm?or focused? I know what she is doing but I can't make out what she is "feeling".

but Like I said i am being very picky and as a sketch I am sure such detail shouldn't be dwelled upon (may be i should have kept my month shut):-X.  I give you 12/10!

Nice drawing!! ;D

Your website looks nice. I noticed you made it with "WYSIWYG Web Builder". Anyway, it looks very nice, but many of the links I clicked on took me away from your site. It would be easier to navigate if links like "The crabshack gallery" opened in a new window. I had trouble navigating through your gallery. It had a different layout than the rest of your website which makes it seem like it isn't part of your website while in reality it is the focus of your website (or so it seemed to me). Sorry if I seem like I'm pointing out all the problems, but I like to know problems rather than just hear "it's good" because that doesn't tell what to improve. Anyway, nice website and really impressive artwork, but I'd work on keeping the look of the site familiar to make it easier to navigate.

EDIT: Oops! :P My computer was doing funny stuff when I went to your gallery page. Still, it would be nice if you had a menu bar for the gallery pages to help navigate. I think I kept getting lost because my connections messing up (or something...)

One of your images is titled "It her not so usual outfit, Nárya smiles. (C) Me". I think the "It" should be "In"

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by narya on Mar 9th, 2006 at 11:15am
Bigkahuna: Yep, that's Elvish... That's what happens when you spend your free time mostly teaching it, you see a use for elvish everywhere.

Tint: Well, I really LOVE drawing, I love it so much that I do it really fast... it's a thing I have to change. About her expression, I'm glad you pointed it out. I usually don't have an idea of what the character is "feeling" when I'm aiming for more movement-anatomic things. So I'd have to try to not forget about it.

"Knowing" her (she's a character I've been drawing, playing and writing about for about five years), she's probably just showing somebody what can she do with a sling... How far can she reach, how high can the stone go, how fast, how accurate... some of that. So I'd say she's concentrate, confindent and comfortable doing it with no need to be perfect...

(hope all that makes sense... ???)

Altay: About the website... well, I'm not good with html, and I've done most of it with pre-made templates (specially the gallery), so I have not idea on how to make it more like the site itself.
I'll try in a time, but for now I'm gonna leave it as it is...

And about links opening in a new window... I still haven't found how can I do that in that web builder...  :-/ ???

Thanks for your comments!

You've been drawing her for five years?!!  Wow!

Is there a story about her?

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by narya on Mar 10th, 2006 at 8:55am
There a "book in project" a.k.a. nearly 200 pages narrating half of her life, and lots of small stories about her... I can't get enough of that woman  ;D 8)

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by Tint on Mar 10th, 2006 at 10:32pm
Sounds way cool! 8)

Ever thought of putting them all together and published?

I am very interested in the stories, what genre are they?  Action/Fantacy?

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by narya on Mar 11th, 2006 at 9:17am
I'm always thinking about that, it's been one of my dreams...

And well, let's say medieval fantasy, some kind of The Lord of the Ring fan fiction, but really just using the places there: Rohan, Harad... I was too lazy (and too adicted to LOTR) when I started writing it, and she was in fact a character I created for a Middle Earth based academy... so now publishing is "difficult"

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by Tint on Mar 11th, 2006 at 7:36pm
That pretty cool.  Fan fiction has its' own magic.  If it is your dream, there must be something you can do.

Preharps you can change the names around?  When it comes to writing ideas, the good writers borrow and the best ones steal.  Most novelist writes about existing civilisations but most readers do not notice.  They just modify a bit of history and call it by a different name.

I am also writing a medevil/epic story.  The main character is an expert slinger.  I'll let you read it once it is done.  May be you can paint some pictures for that too! ;D

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by bigkahuna on Mar 11th, 2006 at 9:09pm
Why don't you guys work on a story where your two characters interact? Would't that be cool? :D

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by narya on Mar 12th, 2006 at 4:41pm
Sure it will at least be interesting.

And about changing names, maybe I'll try, but it sounds strange to me, as if it was a crime or something like this. Suppose I like Tolkien too much to do something like this. We'll see.
And I would really like to read your story! Hope it's finished soon!

(I would let you read mine, but having to translate it to english would take so long...)

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by Tint on Mar 12th, 2006 at 9:46pm
May be someday I'll learn Spanish! ;D

I am not much of a Tolkien fan.  David Gemmell is my favourite.

BTW, Middle Earth is what the ancient Chinese called China in the old tongue.

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by narya on Mar 13th, 2006 at 3:13pm
I didn't know... I knew that in more than one culture/religion the Earth was the "Middle World", but did not know that about China...

And I may try to translate something... we'll se  8)

know what would be cool? if tint would start a comic and narya would start another. both with diffrent styles and what not then halfway through the two main people would bump into each other and you would have some kind of odd meshed style of drawing for each strip.  :)

Hey, that's top-secret!

Just kidding.

I have sent a copy of my comic to Narya so that she have a bit of an idea what I have written.  Eventhough it is totally different from the one I'll be working on next.

I'd probably write up an out line of the novel for her soon!

Umm... so long since I looked at this topic...  :-[

Anyway, Tint, I have to thank you again. It really means a lot to me... and I'm still thinking how to "pay" you, we'll see what cames to my mind... 8)

And about the "duel", I have to admit I'm kind of stuck... but be sure I'll come up with something at the end  ;D

Title: Re: Critiques and ideas needed!
Post by Tint on Mar 30th, 2006 at 12:04am
You are more than welcome, Narya.  It is my pleasure to share my stories with others.  If I could I would send everyone a copy!

However, scanning the book is not an option.  To make the book a reality, I had to find business partners to invest in setting up a company with me.  We had gone through a lot of legal procedures to keep people from doing exactly that (scanning the books)!

" And about the "duel", I have to admit I'm kind of stuck... but be sure I'll come up with something at the end "

if anyone needs mee to write up a scene or two, i can do that.  it's when i get into trying to develop a plot line, deep characters, etc. the peice runs straight into the gutter.  but anyways, i am good at one or two scenes, but not much else.  so my offer stands.

I'm also trying to think of a way to repay Tint.  Most of the things I'd like to send are probably illegal in Hong Kong, and I don't know if you'd like a Winchester Cathedral washing up cloth.... I'll meditate on it, and send you some things as a surprise.  What can England give tint, I wonder?

How about just mail one copy around?  The next person to who gets it is responsible for mailing it out to someone different. ;)  It might take a year to see the copy, but that would be sort of neat anyway.  Every body could also sign a slip of paper that would go with it, and when all said and done it could find its way back to Tint.  If it makes it... :) ::)

Just wanted to tell you all (specially Tint, of course) that I've already recieved my copy of the comic book (at home, so I'll have to wait a couple of days to read it). I'm so happy!

And apart from that, just to let you know that my computer died, so I won't be able to check the forum for a while, maybe until next month. See you!!
