I'll check on how much it'll cost to ship RR spikes . They are the ones that have the HC mark on them . The steel is 1040 but one source said they could go up to 1045 . A sling for a sling is cool . I like the way some members braid their slings and this would be a great opportunity to expand my collection at a nominal cost . Braiding is hard for me but my wife does a good job with her smaller fingers . So far we have RR spikes , flint in the ruff and braided slings mentioned . Thats a good start . :)

I dig in old dump sites for antique bottles . I occasionaly come across caps . What condition is acceptable for a rare cap ? A little rust ? We found an old wire top made out of ceramic material . It was the first Stroths beer cap in Detroit and I believe there is a date on it saying 1902 . We use it as a good luck charm . I also save all the cobalt blue glass even the shards . Someone mentioned arrowheads out of glass ? Cobalt blue would be cool . I've got some bottoms that could be knapped . Different colours too 8) .

Are the Railroad spikes that are marked HC all marked in the same place?  Are they the newer spikes or older?  I can't seem to find any of this type. (so far)  What grade of steel do you think the non HC ones are made out of?

Hey Doug . I got that piece of flint . It looks like the same material a spearhead of ours is made of idicating that the material of the spearhead came from Ohio . My wifes dad found it in a Detroit backyard garden years back . I knapped an edge with it easily , its better than the stuff I find here in Michigan .  I think its flintridge flint . Thanks

You know i dont know? he likes to say that he has traveld the world around collecting rocks. He has gypsum from brazil, some other kind of odd named rock from asia...Lots of fancy stuff. I dont much trust all that comes out of his mouth seems like alot to do just to get some rocks to sell at a flea market :)

wow. this thread is making me feel quite useless. i can carve, but not really. i can do some nice pyrorgraphy, good for gifts, but i don't think anyone would want to buy them. My first bow was pretty much a success.... I think that I could make a really nice one for someone interested in trying out archery, but by shipping costs alone it would probably be cheaper to just buy one at a sports store.

As far as I know they are made of horse hair.

I bought them a few weeks ago on "The tibet village project"- a charity organisation that raise money for the children of tibet.  The slings were made by school kids in tibet in hopes to suports themselves.  There were 7 fo the slings at the time and I bought them all (wouldn't want them to fall in the wrong hands!) ;D

If anyone is interested I am up for trading some of them.

Hey Tint have u used any of the tibetan slings? How do they work? I'm  curious about the little string tail at the release cord... Does it whip loud?  I like noisy slings, (if you can't hit them at least you can scare them out  ;D )

if anyone is at all interested, i would like to make a deal.  if someone sends me a 30 cm(12 in) square of decent leather.  in return, i will send you a braided sling of your desired length, up to six and a half feet from loop to release node with a leather pouch.  it will be "apache" style, as illustrated in one of the articles.  there for, i will have enough leather to make a couple of slings for myself, and you will have a nice new braided sling.  please reply by sending me a private message.

Allright then, been slinging with my new sling from siguy, good stuff.  I was thinking we should have a sling trade.  Anyone interested?  Figured if we get up an even number, names go into a hat to pair two people up to make a trade.  Make up a sling that you like to use, sign it and off in the mail it goes.  

roy, i was just wondering, do you put the ammo on the side that has the braid on it or the side that doesn't show the braid?  i personaly use the side that doesn't show the braid, just because i like to keep the string clean.  also, if you told me, it would let me know which side of the leather you use.  i am curious as to see wich side, because i prefer one side to the other, because of the texture, and wanted to know your preferances.  thanks  for the posotive feed back by the way.

ah, and is the leather holding up well?  the side without the braid is the side of the leather that is softer, and more prone to being chewed up by stones, as i observed on one of my own slings.  on another, i reversed the directionof the leather, so the smoother, seemingly togher side is the side that i load the stones on/in to.  i am just trying to figure out if one is signifiagantly better than the other.

Everything is doing fine, I like how light it is.  I'll keep you updated. :)

you notice the weight of a sling? I dont think i have ever noticed that. But i am pretty blunt :)

I make braided/woven slings out of hemp and nylon to the desired length and here is my wishlist:

  other slings(I like to see how other people do it)
  glandes(clay or lead)
  knives
  ball bearings(about 1 inch diameter)

oh yeah I forgot, I also so designed a sling that you can use for a key chain. I use thick nylon strapping and heavy duty d rings on them. They are alot of fun.

How on earth can you use a sling for a keychain?? Is it really short or what? ???

well, to explain this, it is the sling pocket that you have on your keychain. All you do is add the cords. When was the last time anybody made a fuss about a bundle of string from your pocket. And also think of it this way, you will never be with out a sling. I personaly have gotten one past airport security accidently. It was not my intention to leave it on my keys, I just forgot it was there.

i keep a peice of nylon string tied into a three cord pouch using knots similar to the ones discussed in one of the articles, except that i couldn't figure those ones out so i made my own up, in my wallet.  it is light, and i often forget it is there, also, it doesn't look like much to anyone unless they pull it out and check it  out.

I'm interested as I don't cherish the thought of filing for hours on end to get that taper . A blacksmithed version would be cool . I could always drawfile and polish later for show or use as is for hunting . I'd like my show Ropedart with the 5 interlocking rings which I've never made . If you noticed in the pic I used key rings that only last a couple full blown throws . :) Look at my last post in Primative weapons . There are the specs out of the book. ;D

You could punch in ropedart and martial arts supply and get results. I got a book and a Ropedart from Wing Lam martial arts supply . The ropedart was $19 . I wasn't happy with the design and not sure of the quality of the steel so I made my own out of an old Railroad spike. Get the book Soft weapons . Don't let the name mislead you , it really means flexible . The book features 2 weapons . The 9 link steel whip and the ropedart . Its printed in Bejing ,mainland China . Its a ancient chinese weapon with orgins from hunting and fishing weapons . If you have trouble getting the book let me know in a private message . There are lots of pictures and stuff available to study on the net . :)

Start out by using a bag of sand about a half pound on a rope 12 feet long . Read all the posts on the ropedart on this website and you can figure out the lenght you need . Watch the movie Shanghai kid when he ties a horseshoe to a rope , The movie Scooby doo also has a ropedart sequence. ;) That will give you an idea . Remember use a bag of sand first.... :o

I am posting a trade request/submittal.

I am currently making crochet slings. I make them in either black or blue yarn and one that is 20-22 in long(folded) takes about 1-1.5 hrs. You tell me the size and I will make one for you.

I am asking for either clay or flour oven baked glandes(I am at college and do not have an oven). 10-15 should be enough for a trade. Preferrably almond shaped and about 1/2 the size of a tennis ball (even a little bit smaller would be ok). This would be awesome for me as the stone pickings are slim here at State College, PA(USA) and I do not have access to an oven to make some myself. Here are a few pics of what you could expect.

yep yep. that is about right. It doesnt have to be perfect...

I spend most of my slinging time lookin for ammo and with the little time I have to sling it is a shame. I just thought that those would be the easiest and cheapest for ppl to make who have an oven available.

I already made one extra sling today, measures 23in long folded. Blue.  I like the pouch in this one better so I might keep it and just keep on making more :)

I made my first batch today :). Two tips to others who try this:

1) Oil/Greece/Do something to the pan so that you don't need to find a chisel in order to get the glandes off :o

2) Cook them for longer than 30 minutes. After 30 minutes they were just about right... to eat. I baked them for an extra 2 hours and then they turned out rather hard.

Here's the picture of the first batch. Most of them are cracked in one place or another... Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to change for the next batches I do.

Atlay, those look great. They'd prolly last between 3-5 shots in grass each (depending on how they hit the cracks). I'm more than happy with those. btw, are they about 1/2 size of a tennis ball?

one tip, they reason they crack is because they have an air pocket somewhere(no matter how small). The way to make them not crack as big is to really make sure the dough is kneaded very well. This will eliminate most of the excess air.

Thanks. I think I'll make another batch today. That batch actually wasn't kneaded, just blended with a mixer, then mushed together. I think they're about half the volume of a tennis ball. Since they're a little flat, I made them about half as heigh as a tennis ball, but they're about 3/4 of a tennis ball around.

It'd like a black sling. As for length... I'll need to measure. From my elbow to the ground and I'm about 6', so you might get a rough idea of how long. I'll measure my prefered length on my adjustble sling and let you know. What length do you want? Distance from loop to pouch, or total length, or the total length when folded over? (or something else?)

usually I measure length from when it is folded. So fold it in 1/2 and measure from the top of the loop to the very bottom(which would be the middle of the pouch).

Let me know.  A sling that size is gonna take a little bit longer to make. And dont forget.. I am no professional corcheter :P just really learned how this month and thought I could share it with u guys.  Dont expect the sling to be perfect :p  I will try my best tho!

My sling is 3 feet 10 inches long from the tip of the loop to the middle of the pouch. Though, it doesn't stretch at all. I wouldn't mind if its a little shorter. Maybe 3 feet 5 inches or something like that when it's fully streched out. Just as long as it isn't more than 3 feet 10 inches at full stretch.

You may not be a professional crocheter, but you still make very nice crocheted slings ;D

When you asked if the glandes were 1/2 the size of a tennis ball were you just wonder or would you like me to make them slightly bigger or smaller?

The look like cakes!! Are they edible? They really do look Yummy.

Perhaps if you soaked them in water for a long time, they would soften enough to eat. But even if they did, they'd only taste like salt.

I will make the sling about 3' long. These stretch quite a lot and I figure that it would be a good length. Fully stretched it will be between 3'5" and 3'10"  I Hope.. if it isnt, Ill just pull it apart and keep trying :)

When im done w/ studing and midterm today I will be back here. I am goin to go check what % my other ones stretch and figure out how much plus or minus i will need to make yours.  Wont check this till like 9 tonight so dont expect to hear from me till then.

If you want something like that you can eat put in the same ammount of flour but only add 3 pinches of salt. I also like to add some lard.


bake for the same ammount of time and fry them in bacon greese. Not bad at all.  :)

Yeah, 30-40 minutes @ 325 F is way too short a time for them to turn rock hard. I leave them in the oven until I go to bed. So I bake them about 2-3 hours.

By the way, I just put the next batch in the oven. I made most of these much smaller than the last batch. They're about 5/4 the size of a glof ball (for those of you who don't like math, that's one golf ball plus a quarter of a golf ball :P). I think this batch will turn out much better. I only had 1/4 cup of salt left, so I used a little extra flour to make up for the missing salt. I actually kneaded this batch.  Another useful tip is add a bunch of flour to the surface you'll be kneading on and add some to your hands. It was a pain trying to peel off wet flour from my hands, especially because it was all over both hands... I just keep learning ;D

yep the first time I made flour glandes at home, I didnt put flour on my hands... oh boy did i regret that... it definately is a pain to get that stuff off ur hands

Atlay.. how many u making total.. I dont want this trade to be one sided... it sounds like ur on ur 3rd batch... that is definately more than plenty just for one of my slings.... then again once i started making them, i didnt stop for like 3 days.. i made a ton for myself :P

Just got started on ur sling... gonna make it about 35 inches. The 2 I have madehave about 15-16% stretch(that is with me pulling it pretty tight but not really hard). So 16% strech at 35in will make it about 3'5". Is that a good sizefor you?

hey Atlay, I just realized, There is no way that I can account for this stretch.. it is definately not a linear relationship so I cant just say that there will be 16%.. what I will do is make it 3' long and we'll see.. I will NOT crochet together a loop, you can just make a slip knot and then a removeable knot on the retention cord and it'll be set for your lengthwhatever you want it to be. That is by far the easiest solution. Let me know if thats ok.

You could stretch out all your crocheted slings and take the set of data points (x as regular length, f(x) as streched) then use your graphing calculator to find r for variation and exponential in order to see which line fits better. Then, once you have the best fit line, you'd simply find where f(x) is equal to 42" (more or less). Then you could see if the math really works out. Of course, this is assuming you enjoy this kind of stuff... ::)


Sure, I can tie a slip knot, it would just take a lot of string/slack. I mean, my favorite slip knot is the noose, so I'd probably need a WHOLE LOT of extra string to tie the finger loop.

Well, my new batch ended up all cracked up too, even though I kneaded the dough pretty well (and for quite a while). The cracks kind of bother me... Has anyone been able to make ones that haven't cracked? (I'll upload pictures when they cool)

One question, is the dough ur using self rising?  I think the flour i used was non-self rising. It took a few batches but with each batch I was getting less and less cracks.

Considering I only have 2 fully made crocheted slings and they are about the same size, its kinda hard to do any type of plot currently. Once I get a bigger sample size Iwill be able to get a more accurate relationship. Your current sling is the 3rd one I am making and the only one that is a different size.

A noose is possible considering the amount of stretch it current has ( i will be done with this tonight and post pics when its done). I will leave it just as straps (crocheted with 1 sc row for those of you who would like to know) and let you decide what to do with them. Its looking great, its my 3rd one and so far my best looking one. getting better and better.

I'm pretty sure it isn't self raising... maybe it is :-/ Well, if it is self raising, then self raising works too, it just gives more cracks and needs to be baked longer...

Sadly I have not gotten the chance to talk to my art teacher yet and will attempt to tomorrow... How hard is a clay one after being fired? I want to know if it is worth it or if i should try the flour thing. If the fired clay is better i have acess to plenty :) who knows maybe i can get the paint from him that when fired makes your stuff shiny 8)

Slingwolf, from what I hear, the clay ones basically turn into porclein... but this is different from pottery as it is completely solid and very dense. They are by far better than the flour ones but the flour ones are cheaper and easier to get a hold of.

Atlay, I thought i'd get it done by last night but i didnt. It literally have only maybe 60 stitches left so it wont take that much longer. Its looking great tho.
Those glandes look great too. Those would be very good and just fine for the trade. :-)

Cost may or may not matter... like i said i MIGHT be able to get some clay off my art teacher (and be able to fire them)

Great trade imo.. i hope you'll like ur sling.. it measures 41.5" unstretched, who actually knows how much it will stretch when you get a rock in there and after you make up ur noose/slip loop. It is the best one ive made so far. Pics are comin!

I made a trade for slings with Houndog, its interesting to try to use a sling that others would normally use themselves.  Anyway I would like to see what anyone else has to trade in the way of slings,  I hope to have one made from all on this forum ;D  Two down and countless to go... ;)

I went out and slung on... umm... it was Sunday I think. Anyway, figure-8 + tennisball + balcony = nice distance. Nothing extraordinary, but it was nice. I tried the underhand, but it kept slipping out. The fabric was too smooth. I tried figure-8 again, but it slipped out too. Finally, I tried a golfball. I was expecting it to slip and I forget to let go. It swung around at full speed and the pouch hit me in the back of the head. Luckily though, the ball fell out a little before it started swinging back, so it landed on the ground. I soon lost the golfball, but it flew incredibly far. The crocheted sling has trouble holding ammo that's too large or smooth or both (mostly large), but it is fine. I'm still in love with my 100% adjustable nylon sling. It's all stained and the braid was pulled out at one point where it snagged, so it has a bump, but it's very convinient. The noose on the sling was an ordinary slip knot which was knot the knot I use, but it's just fine. THe knot I use takes about 6 times the slack that that one would. It looks very sleek on a nylon rope. The one I use is basically the same as the one shown below, but with 4 wraps instead of 8 and without bothering to secure it by passing it through the loop at the top

i didnt make the pouch too large. i was basically aiming at a pouch that used the ammo i was using, which is smaller sized rocks... Wish i would have known that you like to mostly throw tennis balls, it woulda definately made that pouch more of a cup so ammo wouldn't slip out but oh well

ive tried that adjustable sling. it is awesome, only crutch is that i dont really like the split pouch design... not as effective  as a leather or solid pouch or even netted one. But besides that its awesome.

Yeah, the split pouch kind of stinks... ::) Let me know if you somehow stumble upon an adjustable non-split pouch ;). Actually, I don't throw much of anything the size of a tennis ball other than a tennis ball. I need to get my hands on a syringe, because they're too light anyway. For dense ammo I use about golf ball sized rocks which wourd fit just fine. However, being a coward (or smart/safe, take your pick), I haven't really used anything denser/more destructive than a tennis ball. That, and the fact that I'm too lazy to find anything of the sort. I'd be nice to live near a golf range... ::)

ive actually been messing with a crocheted pouch and the adjustable sling. I made the pouch really large(i think its 9in long and 6 inches wide). when I was making the adjustable sling, I just put that pouch inbetween; its very similar to the Apache style slings. It works good somewhat, but could be too deep of a pocket. I am goin to try and see if I can develop some other sort of apache style pouch besides just a simple flat one, mayb widers strips?  who knows.. im still trying tho
