Something Really Stupid
Sep 24th, 2020 at 5:17pm

I have lived a wild and crazy life.  It's a miracle many times over that I've lived this long. I have done countless stupid things.    To list them all would fill all of Slinging.org and ten more sites like it.  Here is one:
Some of you might remember me writing about this before.  In December of 1990 I won a sales contest at work.  The prize was a limo ride to Atlantic City with a few of my workmates to see Tyson vs Stewart.  This was the only professional boxing event I ever attended.
The fight lasted all of a minute and twenty nine seconds, which was the way Tyson fights were going at that time.  Our trip was about just the fight.  There really wasn't time to gamble but on the way out to the limo for our ride home a slot machine caught  my eye.
I had only played slots once before that in my life at that time.  It was onboard The Bluenose Special, a ferry going from Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and back.  With those slot machines every time you hit bells and whistles would go off and coins would pour into the tray on the bottom.  Every slot machine I'd ever seen on TV or in the movies also performed that way.  I guess what happened next was more ignorance than stupidity, but the result was the same.
We had to catch the limo so there was no time to screw around.  I put one coin, probably a quarter, into the machine and pulled the lever.  I hit the damned jackpot!  What luck!  I waited for my shower of coins and all of the fanfare but none of that happened.  A little slip of paper came out of a slot near the top of the machine but that meant nothing to me.  Where were my coins?  I assumed the machine was broken, I really didn't have time to investigate, so off I went to catch up to my group before I got stranded in Atlantic City.
A few years later I started going to the casinos once in a while with my late wife and mother.  It was then that I found out that the shower of coins wasn't how it was done anymore.  That little slip of paper I ignored was my winnings.  How much did I walk away from?  Certainly no small amount.  Probably hundreds of dollars.  Possibly thousands.  Big DUH for me!  This is actually the first time I ever shared this story with anyone.
So do you have any dumb adventures to share?

Edit:  the next person to walk up to that machine got a big surprise. I hope it was someone who was down on his/her luck and really needed a break.  You're welcome.

Edit:  I'd also like to add that this was back in my drinking days.  We were all quite lit which was a factor in my expensive error.

I sometimes feel like I went through my life without ever really thinking or putting thought into anything. It is only in the recent years that I have changed that. It has never really been the cause of big blunders just annoyance and boredom.

Also I happened to observe someone getting jackpot at a local bar and in return they got small metal discs to be exchanged for money. Then he bought everyone, including me, a round.
