In sweden also, I believe watching disney cartoons is a crucial part of their christmas celebrations.

Never happened in the uk, for some reason.

The tv and subtitle thing is great.
As a kid in germany on the dutch border we'd watch a lot of dutch telly - because the dutch used subtitles whereas the germans always dub things.

So I learnt to read dutch as  akid from watching telly Smiley
I've lost most of it now (well it was over 40 years ago) but I was pretty fluent in reading dutch as  a kid.

The Disney cartoons are always the same select shorts and clips from Disney movies. And then they show clips from new Disney releases. It stems from the time when cartoons and TV channels were a rarity.

And now for a submission that has a lot less feathers and wears pants-

Gandalf the Grey and Aragorn. ("Sit down Morphy , don't want to hear your nerd sh*t!")

No hear me out guys, I truly love Ian McKellens and Vigo Mortensens portrayals of those iconic characters. So much in this world is about people screwing people over to get ahead but those two characters are a portrayal of two people who would rather fail doing good than give in to evil. There's something about that concept that strikes such a chord with me.

There good choices. I think one of the main reasons Middle Earth is so appealing to so many is the existence of characters like them. Struggling against the dark knowing they are likely to fail but seeing the necessity of at very least struggling.

It's a beautiful thing. I can think of few things more so.

You know, one thing that was lost on me until I most recently read the books again, is that they (the fellowship) travel 99% of the time at night, under the cover of darkness. I'm sure the movies wouldn't have liked filming that, but it makes imagining the scenery while reading the book have a much different feel. It was almost like reading it for the first time all over again once I realized that (read: paid attention).
