Slings that have a specific job
Aug 21st, 2020 at 6:16pm

Does anyone have a sling that only seems to get used for one specific task, or in a certain situation?

I have the sling pictured below.  It's a braided hemp sling which used to have a pouch that was way too small.  It was made when I first started making slings a long time ago, when I didn't really know how to use one yet.  It didn't work at all for the projectiles I typically use, so I cut the pouch out and tied the cords to a much larger leather pouch.  The leather is quite stiff.

Since the new pouch was put on, this sling has been designated to get rid of old fruit.  If there is an apple that has started to turn, or a lemon that has some mold growing on it, this sling is the one I use to send the old fruit soaring out into the brush.

I almost always eat the food that I buy, so this sling doesn't get used very often.  But it has its specific job and it's the only sling I use for that purpose.

I don't go that specific but I will use different types of slings for smaller rough limestone (common rocks from hiking) and lovely round pebbles (beach stones and competition stones).

Smaller rougher stones I'll use thinner braided woven split, or a leather pouch paracord, they hold pretty well but release cleanly and tend not to snag. Larger oval stones thrown for accuracy I'll opt for a balaeric or apache sling as they seem to perform best on this ammo and are the most stable/safe using it whilst also having clean releases.

I suppose you could say that my Balearic slings are my specialised big stone throwers, which I use most often.
I also have a sling dedicated for glandes, as very small pouches work best for them in my experience.
Most of my slings are dedicated sentimental pieces, which were made when my slinging and sling making skills were particularly poor...
I don't yet have a dedicated snowball or ice ball sling though!

Reminds me, how is that manila Balearic sling holding up Judo?

Good stuff guys!  What you brought up is more in line with what I expected.  Specific targets, distances, projectiles, terrains, etc.  I don't imagine many people have a 'fruit sling'.  Smiley

That is something we may need to fix.  Wink

Ha!  I also have a rotten produce sling!  It’s longer and the pouch is larger than my normal asymmetric slings, and I use it to launch produce into the woods on the edge of my neighborhood so the deer and squirrels can enjoy what I won’t eat. I’ve launched everything from oranges to cucumbers and potatoes with it with reasonable success.

A lot of the slinging I've been doing has been small rough stone blasting on walks and park visits which I usually use pocket sized slings for, so not used it too much. From what I've done with it though I'm pretty impressed, it's very light for it's thickness and stiffness, only around 40g which helps for throwing hard and general comfort. Wear wise there's no damage, it feels extremely bulletproof, even more so than sisal.
The only complaint is that it causes pretty significant abrasion on the index finger after a lot of throws so it's probably best to wrap a little tape around if you are using it for an extended period.
