Axe throwing!
Aug 9th, 2020 at 6:55am

Went to one of those axe throwing bars on Friday night and had a blast!
All these years of slinging really made me a natural too.
Curious about technique though.
The instructor showed us both two handed and one handed techniques and it's the one armed throw that I want to discuss.
The throw as instructed, was made facing the target and with your elbow pointing forward and the axe head beside your own head. You step forward with your non - dominant foot and your elbow seems to be the main fulcrum. Much like a dart throw!

After trying this technique for my first throw I did not like the mechanics and reverted to standing sideways(perpendicular) and throwing in what we would refer to as an overhand throw. Aka baseball or football style.
Immediately I started hitting bullseyes from what to me, felt like point blank range lol
For the rest of the evening I continued to do quite well.
I'm thinking they must be instructing a toned down technique cause of the pub setting.
Is there anyone here who's an experienced axe/hatchet thrower who could weigh in?

I love throwing axes!  Never been to one of those pubs though. I taught myself to throw knives as a teenager, and when I tried axes, I approached it the same way as knife throwing. For me it’s a negotiation between the number of rotations and the distance of the shot.  I usually stood at a fixed distance and made a game of how many rotations I could squeeze in and still stick it. That’s a great way to learn control.

My cousin and I used to throw tomahawks and knives a lot.  I had a range in my back yard with a good target made of a section of tree that had fallen across the road.

My cousin was about 12 at the time, he's now 26, married with a kid.

He got very good, he could throw two 'hawks with each hand and hit with all four, at the same time.

Got no idea where the 'hawks and knives are today.

I've been throwing tomahawks in my backyard for maybe two years now. Like anything else, you have to find the technique that is natural for you. I've read and watched many tutorials, but ultimately my way of doing it doesn't exactly match any instruction I've seen. I also alternate and try new things from time to time. For me, a throw that goes as a slight angle (roughly from shoulder to opposite hip) works best for me. Not directly overhand, but not a side throw either (parallels to slinging?  Tongue). I've experimented with throwing from the opposite foot forward (I throw right handed, so left foot forward), as well as the other way with same foot forward as my weapon hand. I feel like I do pretty good either way, with enough practice. I don't see a clear difference in performance, but maybe that's just me.

Long story short, one's ideal throw is an individual thing (again, parallels to slinging?  Tongue).
