All I can say is...it's worked for me for decades.

The reason I went from a relax trigger release back to leather tab and three finger solid grip, is that it provides a great balance between holding the majority of the weight with the middle, ring, and pinky fingers; while providing the thumb and index finger with enough tension to assist in 'aiming' and timing the release of the shot.  Here's a pic of forum member, Pancaker, holding one.

...

The best relax trigger unit I tried for slinging heavy ammo was made by TruFire, which was an archery release that activated on either pull or release.

With today's CNC tech, one could get very creative with this concept.

Mitch I like all your different sling designs, they’re exactly along my train of thought but I never made them, I always thought that an archery release could be incorporated into a grip/trigger

It does make me wonder.
I opt for the full hand grip instead of just thumb and index, and if the release cord is thick enough, I don't think I can actually throw hard enough to make it slip.
For example, I threw this 590g stone exactly 50m today (I measured the distance accurately with a string), using my 15" Balearic sling.
Video here: https://youtu.be/0Qpz8_gXCaA
(slightly better quality hopefully coming soon)

Didn't experience any slippages, so I think it mostly comes down to the release design and how one grips it.

The stone after retrieval:

With those big stones, fist grip is the way to go. Unless you want to injure your arm. I've tried it. It hurts. I've done it.

You wanna throw bigass stones? Use a sling with beefy slingcords with a fist grip. Your body will love you. You can also use a light-ish sling. But if you don't get the release right, it might hurt.

Seems like the trigger system is the way to go if you don’t mind using non traditional materials. I’ve been using a modified pinch grip for years with my index and middle finger pinching against my thumb with a tab. Definitely gives a better grip compared to my experience with thumb against index finger but probably no where near a mechanical release.

An electronic trigger with precise, repeatable timing is a must for any robotic trebuchet that we would use to simulate slinging for science.
