Hammer throw is the proof that at a certain weight the most efficient throw is going to be a pirouette, but I think it’s mainly because your body would struggle to hold it in any other style.

They also maximize projectile energy by building up speed over a relatively long time.

Energetically speaking, that is on par with a modern hunting rifle. This is why I want to come up with a way to sling projectiles supersonically some day... would definitely require a compound sling though, and if the second stage released in the wrong direction it could be very dangerous for the slinger.

I'm pretty sure that was developed specifically to ruin the day of guys in formation with overlapped shields.  I think it predated the Roman Empire and was used against a phalanx, first though.

You’d have to get within range of javelin, arrows, and plumbata to take out a shield wall with a hammer throw... maybe there just weren’t too many people who survived to talk about its effectiveness.

I've also theorized that the hammer would be an excellent weapon to use against advancing formations.  Unfortunately, I've never found any articles where this actually took place historically.

Sorry, but it's a pet peeve of mine:  'Yea' isn't the word you want.  It's 'yeah'.  'Yea' is an anachronistic word you see in the King James bible. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Spellcheck, I shall fear no misspellings for thou art with me.  Thy dictionary and thy thesaurus, they comfort me.
