Even with consistent ammo, the friction is not consistent with a shepherd sling
Why?

The friction is also made inconsistent by grip technique, release technique, speed of throw,
that's the slingers problems, practice

, and the build of the sling itself. Does it have inconsistencies?
this remains the same shot after shot

Then there is the action of the stone swaying in the pouch, even tiny, due to the changing lengths of release cord and retention cord caused by wide grips during a throw.
Swaying which can only fully be eliminated with extra friction.
Yes it is true this happens, cupped slings have it more than split pouches, generally there has to be a good match between pouch design and ammo design. if the match is good then even if it happens the swaying is repeatable and follows a pattern much like the turning of the pouch around the rotor. In the end they align giving a rifle spin.
a good sling , style, and practice are needed. same as with any other sling variable or weapon system
