Yo-yo Discus Sling
Jun 23rd, 2020 at 1:56pm

Has anyone here done this before? Hard to imagine not. I am thinking of a way to create a good disk throwing sling. This is just a single piece of string sling, as a way for throwing yo-yo like clay disks. I have made a few disks of clay and these are still drying so I have not been able to test it yet. My thinking is that it on release the disk will role over the cord so it uses the cord as a runway for gaining spin, then when its releases it will more or less stabilize in flight due spin

Another really great idea! I've just thought of a really good way to make the ammo for it as well. How did you make yours? I love the simplicity.

Wow! That is really unique. It's novel, yet satisfyingly simple in equal measure.

Trouble with social distancing? Just swing around a six-foot sling at all times.

maybe put a small yo yo at the end of a whip?  suicide by yo-yo or supersonic yo-yo? Tongue

Thank you Jauke for the concept, I think I'm on to something...
Please welcome WayoftheSling's yo-yo sling design!

Eagerly awaiting videos guys!!

Super simple design

Any success and you could have a clay pigeon throwing design.

You throw the disks I’ll throw the stones . Great target practice.

Holy moly, that would be amazing! I wish slinging were more commonplace, there would be some awesome activities you could do if you had several people.

Imagine if you could do it yourself, get the dual rotor going (180 deg out of phase) and then left...right. That would take some coordination.

Dual wielding slings, what will they think of next? Well, give Jauke some time and we will find out.  Smiley

I have a place close to me that is a shotgun clay range, I’m going to try get there and sling some clays this year but with all 2020 is throwing at me so far I’m not holdin my breath.

As for dual wield slings , I’ll leave that to the ambidextrous folk, I can barely write my name left handed

@Way Of The Sling

I also thought about an Y-sling configuration but I don't deem it desirable for this

An Y-sling design may desirable for disks without a groove for the cord.

But this projectile has a groove for the cord, 1 cord is all we need for the friction. This sling has an extremely smooth release and yet a very high rate of desirable friction spin.  Disks need friction to fly just like glandes. The Y-release would reduce friction. I threw 12 clay disks with my Y-sling yesterday and the flew like  disks should, for a little while, then they drop, because they didn't spin fast enough (not enough friction in the Y-pouch),

I've just tested it and the single piece of cord works great, it is superb fun at such simplicity.

I made the yo-yo- disks just like you, it is very easy and quick.

Now its just a matter of perfecting the disk. I found with disks that even the slightest imperfections can send them off course, while the perfect disk is unmatched in straight flight. So they are the extreme on both ends of inaccuracy and accuracy. We need a mold for making the perfect disk that flies straight. These are not hard challenges to overcome.

I've also been thinking about a simple sling like this with 2 strings instead of 1 and 2 grooves in a glande-like projectile instead in a disk. This way you could have 2 simple strings that hold the glande superbly well but also give it the perfect runway for rifling.

Another nice thing about consistent grooved ammo flies out the same every time, because the runway doesn't change and it has little freedom of choice where it wants to roll over the runway  Cheesy While a regular sling pouch tends to allow greater freedom of movement to the projectile at what angle of degree it wants to roll out, even if the difference is just a few degrees.

All of this is quite funny. First the regular sling frustrated me and I sought a way out through a frictionless design. Now I went 180 % the opposite way to solve the problem and I went for a sling that is 100% designed for friction to work properly  Tongue And it turns out to be even simpler.

I am imagining a small saucer disk like molded lead - yo-yo projectile instead of clay...if the disk is perfect, imagine the speed, flight path and distance possible...

This also explains why regular slings are the most popular, they are in between the extremes Wink

I just threw 5 clay disks into the distance
My jaw dropped, they flew unlike anything I have thrown. I am more convinced that this is a possibly world distance record breaking sling design.

Give this a shot guys, buy some clay, make some disks, anyone can do this, this is super fun.

of course sidearm is the way to go here.
