Hey, from Northern China
Apr 13th, 2020 at 10:07am

Hello y’all,

I’m an Oklahoman currently living in northern China.
I’m new to slinging, but have always loved hands-on hobbies.  For the last 8 years or so, I’ve been doing leatherwork.  My most recent project was making a pair of bison moccasins with some stingray accents on the tongues.  Anyways, this week I somehow stumbled onto slinging and thought it would be a cool hobby.  I previously tried my hand at archery and bow making back in the states, and while there are some places to practice here, slinging just seemed like something that’s really cool that I could more easily practice in China.  I’ll be looking at crafting my first sling soon.  I’ve still got tons of bison leather, a couple stingray hides, leather látigo lace, and enough paracord for a couple of braided cords at least.
Happy to hear any ideas if anyone has any about how these materials and how they would affect sling physics.  The bison leather may need to be skived down a bit as it’s 6-7 oz.
Anyways, nice to be meeting you all in the future and I look forward to learning more about this cool pastime.
Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome, Kick!

I’ll be doing material testing with some leather conditioner to see how supple I can get the stingray hide, but I feel it would at least look cool.   Grin

Welcome from Pennsylvania!  Sounds like you have some interesting materials to work with.

You can use 6-7 oz leather.  It all depends on the design.  Here's a sling I made a while back.  It's hard to tell in the picture, but the leather pieces are in that same range.  Probably closer to 7 oz.

That’s good to know.  Super cool looking sling you’ve made there!

And thanks for the welcome!

I may just have to experiment with a few designs and see how it turns out.

Howdy, brokeOkie;
Welcome from New Jersey.  I bet you'll be the only one on slinging.org  with a stingray sling.

Thanks greenjay, my homeland neighbor!  Any good south central plains slinging organizations?

Thanks Ratman!  Still wondering if this material is going to be flexible enough.

What would y’all suggest...sueded side of the pouch touching stone or the textured hide touching the stone?  On one hand I could see sueded being better for releasing, but wondering if textured side could give a needed spin to the ammo to cut the air better?

I always have the suede side of the leather touching the stone. Somehow that's just always made more sense. I don't know with stingray though. Time for experimenting I would say Cheesy
