Ahhh this is one of those issues that I find so disconcerting. The peer review system can be gamed badly either accidentally or overtly. In a similar vein I’ve also had a running debate with a friend over whether or not professional skeptics like Joe Nickel or Michael Shermer actually are a net benefit to science in general.
