Home training setup
Mar 26th, 2020 at 11:50am

In efforts to get some good practice in (especially in these days of quarantine) I set up a home practice target.

The mattress is safe to throw tennis balls at (though if you scuff a shot and hit the garage door it will make a very loud bang).

The target itself is distance scaled Balearic target from 20m range down to 4m. I've also accounted for projectile size so that any sort of hit (even glancing) on this target would be equivalent to a hit on the real thing.

Of course, it's still a bit different- the range being much shorter means you have to aim relatively over to the left to account for the offset of projectile and eyeline (at 20m range the offset is around 6 degrees, at 4m it is around 30 degrees). Even so, the precision required is comparable.

I was quite surprised at how bad my accuracy is at first and how much it improves after 20 minutes or so of slinging, I think it's largely just relaxing the technique so I'm going to try that more deliberately in coming days. I've noticed similar with range slinging before- keeping loose is paramount.

That is a nice set-up. I have a tiny student flat so I don't have any space. Doesn't stop me slinging sock balls across the kitchen at the pillows in the bedroom though Cheesy I haven't broken anything yet so I'm sure it's fine. It's still ok for me to go outside though so I should get some outdoor practice in before they bring in any more restrictions.

I really like the idea of scaling down the target to simulate distance.  Great idea!
