A Random Thought
Feb 22nd, 2020 at 11:27pm

I am watching the first season of The Beverly Hillbillies.  There must be something wrong with me.  The mansion Jed buys in Beverly Hills looks like a horror to me.  I would be miserable living in such a place.  Even if I had Jed's money I'd prefer his old house back in the hills.  I'd fix it up a little... screens, glass for the windows, and such, but I'd be much happier there.  Weird or what?

I don't understand mansions. First thing I would buy would be a wood cabin.

The sole purpose of places like that is to flaunt the fact that you can afford it. I've been in local modern mansions and they have fountains, non accessible galleries, closets the size of regular living rooms.

well I'd like a decent library.
By 'decent' I do mean the size of an aircraft hanger with motorised shelf platforms and a million book capacity with automated book find and retrieve.
Working on the principle that I'd just buy loads of books so there'd always be fresh stuff on the shelves.

That said, I have about 10,000 e-books on my nook.

At the moment it's great. I just scroll randomly through a folder full of books to pick the next one and have read a lot of different authors and books I'd never previously heard of.

Back to mansions.
So library, games arcade.
Probably just a  couple multi-platform game cabinets and a LOT of pinball machines Smiley

A good sized fishing lake would be good and a decent woodland area.

But that's more big land than a big house.

The whole huge room thing, just doesn't work well for me.
Unless it's a library or kitchen with all the 'toys'. What's the point ?

Now what I've always wanted to do, is buy an enormous warehouse.
Roof it with a clear roof and a shitload of solar panels and build a country 'estate' inside it.

So you get all the space, programmable weather, free power and a few small houses, but all the storage and specialist areas and rooms you want Smiley Outdoors !

Likewise if i were going to have a luxury boat I'd do a similiar thing. Gut a super tanker and build my park in the hold.
Off road segways all round, for transprt Smiley

Plus the tanker would give me a launching ground for my Gibbs technology amphibious vehicles.

A super tanker is also harder for pirates to board, and - obviously - there would be anti-pirate measures - sensor guided electric mini-guns would be favourite.

List of 'rooms' I would like in my warehouse/tanker:
library
walk in salami and cheese curing 'cave'.
A kitchen 'area' complete with every oven type,  gadget and toy always available for use.
shed sized smoker
Fully equipped wood working area
fully equipped meat processing area
Rapid prototyping room - complete with metal printers, multimaterial printers and some fdm machines as well.
2 lane Sling range.
Games arcade
Mini-woodland with mycelium infused trees for a varied fungal smorgasbord
'natural' pools and streams with both edible fish and crayfish.
non-sling target range: guns, bows etc.

I reckon 100m x150m, might do it - bit obviously the bigger the better Smiley

I think I'm leaning more towards billionaire territory rather than just ordinary multimillionaire capabilities.
But you never know Smiley
win a 100million on the euro lottery, and who knows what I could do !

My one goal currently is to buy my own summer cottage but I have thought a big forest and a nice tent would be enough. I think having land and space is more my goal than a building.

don't know rat man, CA's mansion sounds good Tongue
land size is more important than building size  in my mind.
mansions are probably good for big families inviting friends who can afford spending time there plus a lot of employees like chef chauffer trainers etc . otherwise it'll be miserable and a waste of money to keep.

A few drawbacks to a mansion... you need a staff to keep it up.  Of course if you're rich you can afford a staff but then you'll have little privacy.  Also the bigger the house you have the more people will want to move in with you.
I do like some of c_a's ideas.
For me the land would be more important than the house also.    My lottery house would be a log cabin with a huge fireplace with a big loft.  A big wooded, fenced in yard for the dogs to run wild in would be a must.  And it would have to be waterfront.  A freshwater lake or river would be preferable but I wouldn't rule out ocean or Bayfront.  My big extravagance would be a huge garage.  I'd have a few vehicles.  A barn would be good too.  I'd have critters.
I could never be comfortable in a mansion like Jed bought.  I'm just not a fancy kind of guy.

when making something I spend more time searching for raw material sources and tools than designing and making. It would be freeing to have others deal with that stuff and focus on planning designing making and troubleshooting the actual thing I'm making . It would be awesome to outsource cooking and driving  and if the driver/cook is your friend who gets paid to do what he loves then its a win-win situation.

Was just out slinging today and I realised the one person I would want to hire is someone to track exactly where my sling ammo goes. I only have a finite number of good sling stones and spending ages wandering around trying to find them is wearisome.

I would still cook because I enjoy it but I would definitely delegate life's more menial tasks to my staff.  And my staff would be friends who would have easy, good paying jobs.  Things like getting the cars registered and inspected, dealing with the township, paying bills, laundry, dishes, housecleaning, etc..  I would have important rich guy stuff to do (walking the dogs, fishing, chasing women half my age, etc.) so I wouldn't want to bothered with such things.

Mike already lives with me so he could be my Personal Assistant.  To house the very small staff and concubines  there would be "Mother In Law" cottages on the property.
